Brown Trout Stocked - Some Are Huge!!
____________________________________________________________

Dear (Contact First Name),
Thank you for being with us again!  The Upper Stretch was stocked with incredible trout March 14th - many were very large, and some were downright huge!  The 1st video below is of Tom talking about trout, the season so far, and Camp Victory and the 20% sale.  The 2nd through 5th videos are of some of the trout stocked by Slate Run Tackle Shop's Brown Trout Club.  The 6th is a video we present yearly showing Camp Victory - this is where our spinning outfits that are traded in for the March trade-in go - the camp has never had to buy fishing equipment since its inception.  Not only do you get a 20% discount, but the very special individuals attending the camp get an outfit they can take home and call their own!  There is a lot more planned as we continue stocking, flies continue to hatch, and anglers are caught by the camera catching them. Stop in at the shop and say hello, we'll answer any questions you may have about The Stretch, and help in any way we can!  You can also call for the latest the stream, hatches, and equipment...

What's working...

Black Stone Flies, Brown Stone Flies, Slate Drake Parachute dries to imitate the emerged Black Stone, Black Caddis, Tan Caddis, BWOs, and a few very early March Browns have made their presence along with black midges! Hang a dropper under the Slate Drake or a strike indicator and try a caddis soft hackle emerger, BWO emerger, or a March Brown soft hackle emerger.  Underneath you can be successful with Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns, Golden Micro Stones, Rycophilias, Hare's Ears, Zug Bugs, San Juan Worms, and Prince Nymphs!  When the water is higher, try a weighted bugger or Sculpin near the shore - if the water is lower try the same offering in the current.  The trout are looking for a meal!
If you know an angler under 16 years of age, Slate Run Tackle Shop gives free voluntary Junior Fishing Licenses!  The only thing you'll need for the free Junior License is the Social Security number for the person receiving the Junior License!

Time To Retire

It has been 40 years since we started the shop.  So much has happened on Pine Creek since then - Babb Creek is a trout stream, Pine's fly hatches have prospered and multiplied, The Stretch (Catch-And-Release) where everyone can catch exceptional trout year round has expanded to 2.8 miles, and the culture of conservation, appreciation, and joy of this very special stretch of Pine Creek is prospering.  If you've entertained the thought of owning Wolfes General Store/Slate Run Tackle Shop, this is your opportunity.  Give Lisa Lynn a call at 570-660-0626, a Davis Real Estate realtor.  Thanks, Tom & Deb.

Just a few more casts...

This winter was yet another great learning experience for all of us here at Slate Run Tackle Shop!  We actually had more anglers than hunters, and later, after hunting season was over, we still had good numbers of trout fisher people!  With so many individuals on the water, many lessons were learned and more than a few conclusions were able to be drawn about trout and the winter-time techniques to catch them.  If one would extend the new understandings to what is occurring in the stream throughout the rest of the year, the new knowledge may add to the pleasures of our time on the water...
Anglers found out that when the water was above 3 feet, regardless of water temperature, the trout would be along the shore line.  Most fishermen did not wear fishing boots this winter!  They fished from shore and worked streamers along the banks or out only a few feet.  They also used nymphs and Squirmy-Wormies with excellent success.  When the water dropped below 3 feet and approached the 2.75 foot mark, the trout started moving out further and into the current.  Of course, you have to add to this equation the fact that in the slightly lower water the temperature was higher and increased the trouts' metabolism - increasing their need for food and actions to acquire it!  At the same time the shallows would heat, possibly 2 degrees by 4:00, and the flies would be more active, drawing in the trout once again.
As Tom said above, even with slush ice floating down the main current, anglers picked up trout next to shore or in the shallower flats!  One angler went back out at 3:30 in the afternoon and caught 7 trout fairly quickly, saying the action was very much like a good afternoon in May during a hatch! The point is, the situation was optimal for the trout to be active just as it was optimal for the flies.  The best conclusion revolves around the relativity of temperatures, water levels, time of day, water levels increasing or decreasing, sunlight, and all this in comparison to what conditions were present before the time on the water.  This relativity is especially important in the winter because the optimum situations have a smaller window for the water temperature, insects, and trout in any 24 hour period.  What behooves us is, as temperatures warm and both trout and insect activity increases, there is still a window for optimal activity.  Watch carefully the changing conditions, observe the insect and fish activity as it changes, and you may be on to a better understanding of the bio-rhythms of your favorite stretch of water.  Although, be careful with making generalizations, through the riff and around the corner, things may be happening quite a bit differently!

Shortly we will be stocking again in The stretch.  We will be going from Tomb Flats to Bonnell Run at Clark Farm Access - if all goes well we may incorporate float boxes to reach the more inaccessible areas of this lower stretch to assure that the great trout are well spread out!  The trout are even bigger than last year's and we can't wait to get more in!  We'll have many more stockings scheduled.  Watch the stream updates and we'll try to let you know in advance when we'll be putting them in - we would appreciate your help!  Until then, may you have windless days and tight lines...
