We are glad you are with us again!  Fishing has been spectacular! The 1st video above is of Tom talking about the great fishing we are having, and he speaks of the need for careful catch-and-release.  The 2nd video is of Ray Novak bait fishing with a tight line with a netless release.  The 3rd shows Ed Beakley spying, hooking, landing, and releasing a nice brownie.  The 4th is a video of Dave and his great smallmouth bass. The fifth is a video of John Zydallas and another of his many Pine Creek browns. And, the last is a video of Vince Sakora and his hefty rainbow trout.  There is a lot more planned for the future as I am doing the next two newsletters from Alaska!  There will be more trout catching on Pine along with a video of flies taken from the surface as well as below.  It is hoped the next two newsletters will include a few videos of Alaskan rainbows, Grayling, Dolly Varden, and salmon being caught as well as feeding underwater from near the Arctic Circle down to the Kenai Penninsula.

What's working...

It is best to hit the water from 6 to 10 in the morning and 6 to 9:30 in the evening when the sun is less direct.  If it is cloudy, it can be good throughout the day.  Up Slate and Cedar I would use a Green Drake, Sulphur, Light Cahill, Yellow Sally, Yellow Stone (a Yellow Stimulator works well), BWO, or an Adams or Royal Wulff.  On Pine, I'd stick to the Slate Drake, BWO, Rusty Spinner,  Sulphur, Light Cahill, Stimulator, and Caddis.  Whatever you do, don't forget to add a Psycho Ant (the big one) to your bag of tricks - it is about time for great Psycho action for both trout and bass!

  Just a few more casts...

And, a few thoughts about stream temperatures and the welfare of our trout... It is interesting to hear people talk about Pine Creek water temperature as the stream warms in June.  I do the stream updates both for The Shop as well as the Orvis Pine Creek site - it is always perplexing to decide what to put!  "Just stick a thermometer in the water," you might say.  That in itself is the crux of the problem on several levels.  I've never stuck my thermometer in the water and seen trout swimming around it - that is not only because they would not be that close to a predator, but because where I can physically put the thermometer is not where the trout would go for survival, which are Pine Creek's cold water resources - tributaries and underwater springs and spring seeps.  When I get back from Alaska in August, Ben Welch and I plan to do some underwater diving with the waterproof camera and a thermometer to show the amazing fluctuations in temperatures from one area of the creek to another... it should be revealing.  As Tom said in the opening video, the trout know where to move to find their optimal environment, it is automatic for them!
The second part of this temperature problem involves the angler. When the water temperature reaches the middle 70s where anglers are wading, we stress the fish by hooking them, reeling them to this warmer water, and landing them near the surface where the water is warmest.  If the water in angler locations reaches the middle to upper 70s this year, it is probably best to let the fish survive in their colder haunts without being pursued - fish the runs or try for Pine Creek bass. After the temperatures drop, it would again allow for more responsible catch-and-release of Pine's incredible, priceless, brown trout.  I try to enjoy nature's response to conditions no matter what they are - the cycle of life with the aquatic insects, minnows, crustacea, trout and their resiliency, all make up a biosphere that is unique on "The Stretch." We can learn from it, wonder at it,  and enjoy what we have, this will go a long way to continue its preservation...
