Thanks for being with us again!  What an amazing pile of trout the Slate Run Brown Trout Club stocked - this Friday the total will be 1500 beautiful trout!  The 1st video above is of Tom talking about fly hatches and the Slate Run Brown Trout Club.  The 2nd video is of Bill Logan and a few of the many trout he caught.  The 3rd shows 6th grader Gabby Zydallas catching and releasing a nice trout.  The 4th is a video of more of the stocking from Slate to Tomb Flats.  The fifth is a video of the 1st stocking of the section from Black Walnut Bottom to Clark Farm Access and Bonnell Run. And, the last is a short video of a few seconds of the incredible caddis hatches Pine has seen lately.  There is a lot more planned for the future as we stock several more times - and we'll do it again this fall!  Come on up and let one of those 25-inch brownies nail your March Brown or Gray Fox!

What's working...

Actually, it seems best now to hit the water from 6 to 10 in the morning and 5 to 9 when the sun isn't as direct.  With the colder weather the next few days and cooler water temperatures it may work to hit the stream in the middle of the day as well.  If there is cloud cover, the BWOs love an overcast day and the action could be on all afternoon!  The major flies now are the March Browns, different caddises, Gray Foxes, Hendricksons, Sulphurs, and Blue-Winged Olives (Rusty Spinner for the spinner stage).  There have been huge hatches along Pine and at times it has seemed there were 100 trout working at once!  If you see the March Brown spinner or the Hendrickson spinner, try a Slate Drake - the dark body is perfect and the parachute allows the fly to sit in the film like a spinner (not to mention there are black stones around that the fly impersonates extremely well - it has worked very well for many anglers coming into the shop!  It is a very exciting time on Pine!

  Just a few more casts...

There certainly are different strokes for different folks!  I mentioned to one angler he might not want to wade quite as deep as he was since where he was standing was where the trout usually feed and wanted to hold.  That, even though Pine was big, the reaction might be a lot like on a smaller tributary - spook the trout in the bottom of a pool and the trout go dashing throughout the rest of the water letting the whole congregation of their finned friends in on the secret that something is amiss!  I can visualize the displaced trout 20 feet from shore sprinting toward the other side spreading the word that the anglers are coming.  Well, I do believe we should all fish, or wade where we like (as long as it isn't in front of someone else who already staked out their spot).  In fact, it wasn't 20 minutes after the gentleman came to shore that the fish started to work again, so all was well.  I was polite when I mentioned the idea of wading closer to shore in the beginning, but, a lecture did follow.  He said, I love to be here, to fish, to relax, and to immerse myself in nature and, for me, that includes being waist deep in the moving water - then and only then am I fishing and a part of the whole scene.  I thought that was great that he knew that and, for him, the catching part was secondary.
You know from my writing in the newsletter that I use the Slate Drake A LOT!  I had put the parachute Isonychia away and switched it for the March Brown.  Then, anglers started coming into the shop talking about the appearance of the March Brown spinner and the Hendrickson spinner and that they had caught absurd numbers of trout using the Slate Drake as the imitation.  It made sense, and just in time.  That same evening the trout wouldn't touch my March Brown above or below the surface.  A Gray Fox, a BWO, a Rusty Spinner, a caddis, and a soft hackle didn't make out any better.  Then, a bell rang in my head and the conversations with the Slate Drake users replayed.  I quickly tied on a size 12 Jim Oman Slate Drake and, first cast a trout swirled and took.  After a few more takes, I wished the bell had gone off a little sooner so I would have had more time that evening.   Anyway, the fly is much more than a Slate Drake, as if that wasn't enough in itself.  Keep it handy, it may be the go-to-fly when it gets harder on the water to figure out the trout!
