Thanks for being with us again!  What an amazing pile of trout the Slate Run Brown Trout Club just stocked - almost 800!  The 1st video above is of Tom talking about trout and Slate Run Brown Trout Club.  The 2nd video is of eight of the larger brown trout stocked.  The 3rd shows a few of the buckets of the trout stocked April 22.  The 4th is a video of stocking with an underwater look - taken by Slate Run Tackle Shop Intern, Ben Welch.  The fifth is a video of Dick Crawford taking us fishing on upper Slate Run.  And, the last is a series of pictures of our dear friend, Bob Weber who recently passed away.  There is a lot more planned for the future as we stock several more times this spring.  Come on up and let one of those 25-inch brownies sip in your size 16 Rusty Spinner!

What's working...

Actually if you hit the water when the sun is out, it seems almost everything is working.  The tried and true strike indicator with two bead-head nymphs tied off the bend of the hooks is doing great - the nymphs can be Pheasant Tails, Golden Micro-Stones, Hare's Ears, Copper Johns, etc.  If you use a Slate Drake as the indicator, don't be surprised if they hit it on the surface as a Black Stone (a perfect imitation)!  Buggers are working as well.  Watch for surface action in slower water - Black or Brown Stones, BWOs, Paraleptophlebia, a smaller and a larger caddis, and soon, Hendricksons, Red Quills, Quill Gordons, and March Browns.  Spinners and Rebels are doing well for the spin fishermen -  and we have circle hooks in stock for the bait anglers - circle hooks give a hook-up in the lip and very rarely hook the trout anywhere but in the lip!  The trout are close to shore - fish near the banks.  Many, many trout are in the stretch, opportunity is certainly there for very memorable days!   Come up and give it a try - bring your camera!

  Just a few more casts...

If you are lucky, a few times in your life your path may cross with someone very special.  For all of us in Slate Run, for outdoor people in north central Pennsylvania, and for everyone who knows of the Black Forest Trail, the Bob Weber Trail, the Golden Eagle Trail, and the Pine Creek Trail, that special person was Bob Weber.  "Special" seems limiting in scope when it comes to Bob because there was so much more to him.  He wasn't just Bob, even though that is what he would think of himself.  For Bob, who he was, was intertwined completely with his beloved mountains, with his streams, valleys, trails, and every minute part.
Bob came into the store almost every day - much of the time, in the winter, on his snow shoes.  We all hear the grumbling throughout a particularly long, cold winter and it works like the plague as the mood transfers from one to another.  Not so Bob!  This writer looked forward to seeing and talking to Bob all winter - year after year.  Having Bob walk in the store was like opening the door in January or February and having a warm tropical breeze meander in.  Always with a huge smile with a child's excitement in his sparkling eyes, he would begin to talk of the wonders he saw on his way to the store.  One particularly blustery day with the temperature under ten below zero, Bob came in and could hardly talk -not from cold, but from excitement.  The faces of the mountains toward the sun had bare trees while those hidden behind the ridge were aglow, sparkling with minute frozen droplets of water on every small branch - he said it was an incredible wonderland.  Another day, the second he walked in, his excitement bubbled out - "The snow from pine boughs caught on gusts of wind looked like breaths of winter - they were there, then they were gone."  Bob was always on the trail with his ax and saw, fixing, clearing, and continuing on.
We will not forget Bob.  We will miss him but we will talk from time to time: with a warm breeze in the summer, the hoot of an owl, snow on the wind, whispers in the pines, gold on open trails along the ridge, hatching of insects, the feeding of trout, the sight of a butterfly on nectar, the falling of leaves, the pastels of spring, and the sun above distant vistas, will all carry Bob's message of the beauty of his wilderness. We will hear you Bob, and we will be better for it.  It is good to think of all this, and that you and your beloved Dottie are happy together again...
