Thanks for being back with us again!  The first video above is of Tom announcing the new regulations for the 2.8 mile stretch from the mouth of Slate down to Bonnell Run.  The 2nd video is of Scott Yoder as he is successful with his trio of flies from shore.  The 3rd video shows Camp Victory and the fishing that our March Trade-In supports.  The fourth is a video of a Pine Creek angler catching a nice brown trout on the Turkey Pool.  And, the last is a video of many trout being stocked into Pine by the Slate Run Tackle Shop's Brown Trout Club. There is a lot more planned for the future, particularly after the ice is finally out! Come on up and take advantage of the March Trade-In and we'll catch a few trout as we talk in the shop!

What's working...

Ice everywhere!  If the ice were not here, I'd be catching them on a Slate Drake with a Golden-Micro Stone dropped from the bend of the hook. Under that I'd drop a Pheasant Tail or Hare's Ear - actually, before the ice swallowed Pine I was using two Micro Stones below the Slate.  I believe that will be the best way to probe my haunts after the hard water is gone.  Maybe the March Brown will make an early showing although I wouldn't count on it this year. The Slate Drake as the strike indicator is a great move to make because Jim Oman's parachute tie lays flat on the water and is the best imitation for the black stone so prevalent all winter and spring!  Last year I caught as many coming to the surface for the Slate as I did with the droppers below. The action was all in the slack water closer to shore.  If the water levels are a lot like last year, the same Slate/Stone tactic should do well! In any case, it can't be long now!

  Just a few more casts...

February was pretty tough around here for fishing.  January 26th I was going to be back at the shop and fish after a long weekend in D.C. - well, I had taken my equipment out of the car for the trip and forgot about putting it back in the trunk before heading up Pine.  I just watched Pine below Slate and thought, tomorrow! Well tomorrow came, the car was reloaded with all the angling paraphernalia and, when I got to Slate the opportunity to fish had passed.  It was totally frozen - from Slate all the way through the whole "Stretch."  So you know why it has been a tough five weeks.
Then, a beginning fisherman came into the shop.  He had bought a new rod earlier and hadn't had a chance to fish yet, never caught a trout on a fly.  On his way to Slate he took route 44 up along Upper Pine Bottom Run, found a pull-off, and he spied some open water.  No waders, just some snow boots on, he dug the new rod out of his car, tied on a size 12 Adams, and snuck up to to a slow moving pool.  A short cast later and his grizzly/blue dry was moving through the current. There was an attacking swirl and he had his first trout, a brookie, on a fly rod.  It takes a beginner to not know the limits, to see the possibilities rather than downside.  Those brookies he caught that day, in bitter cold weather, and on the surface, will never be forgotten.  I know I won't soon forget the joy he had when he walked into the shop that day!

Thanks for being with us again. We'll be back in another few weeks with the latest news about our trout, flies, catches, and scenes of our favorite waters.
