Merry Christmas on Pine Creek - From The Shop To You
A Merry Christmas Video on Pine Creek
From Our Shop To You

Thanks for being back with us again at this very special time of the year!  The first video above is of Tom wishing us a Merry Christmas, and, at the same time, asking for your support (if you haven't yet voted) for the new regulations just as they are presented - No trout kill all year-round with all tackle - the voting link is in the caption below the video.  The 2nd video is of Pine Creek from the mouth of Slate through Tomb Flats taken Christmas week.  The 3rd video shows Dave Wonderlich catching a rainbow on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula in the Russian River.  The fourth is a video of Max Snavely with a fine August brown from the base of Schoolhouse Riffle.  Next is a picture of  Bill Worobec, past Fish Commissioner, and Tom Finkbiner discussing conservation on Pine.  And, the last is a video of Art, a Pine Creek regular, catching a nice trout below Little Slate in August. There is a lot more planned for the future... Come on up and enjoy some excellent winter trout fishing on Pine!

What's working...

Fishing has been very good!  It is late December and many trout are still being caught on the surface (more on the surface than below). The Slate Drake #12  is the major go-to fly. The Slate Drake is a perfect pattern now to replicate the hatching and floating Black Stone Fly - which seems to be ever present! Add a dropper, or droppers to the Slate Drake and you are giving the trout and yourself more options.  Good droppers include the Micro Stone, Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, and the Copper John.  Emergers can also be used below the surface as droppers.  There are a few who are having success trailing a nymph or emerger behind a Wooly Bugger off the bend of the hook.  The real story are the numbers of trout in The Stretch, and that they are still looking up - especially in the afternoon as the water warms.  Don't wade far, the trout move into shallower water where it is a little warmer and it is where the flies are hatching - fish the calmer water.  If you do wade, limit it to only a few feet so as not to spook the trout that are closer to shore!  Just flip the trio of flies to the head of your presentation instead of false casting, it will greatly help not getting the flies tangled.  Have patience with the slow moving Slate Drake... it is being watched!

Just a few more casts...

Well, the time in winter has come when I find the fishing a little easier, a bit more predictable.  You might find this hard to believe since winter is here and the water temperature is now in the thirties.  But, that is just the point, there is a lot more consistency now.  With the morning water temperatures in the lower to middle thirties, there is once again an optimal feeding time - the afternoon.  When the water warms from 33-35 to 35-37, or 38, the trout move into the slower, shallower water, the flies emerge, and the feeding activity increases.
Earlier, when the temperatures were warmer, a decrease from the water being 52 to a much cooler 45 would put the fish off their feed. Even though the water was still 45, their feeding was sparse.  But, when it rises as stated in the first paragraph from 34 to 36 or 37, the feeding greatly increases because the temperature and trout response is relative.
Also, don't wait for the air temperature to warm for increased activity.  The air can be 10 degrees but if the sun is bright, the water in the shallows will be warmer first and trigger the hatching and feeding.  If you have ever gone to your car in the afternoon on a sunny but bitterly cold day and found the interior warm, that is the same principle warming effect. Your waders will shed any breeze and a heavy coat will keep you very comfortable.  Take advantage of this small warming movement that happens each day in Pine.  There are many, many trout in The Stretch, and, they are waiting for a fly to drift into their vicinity.  It doesn't get much better than winter on our great stretch of Pine!
