Thanks for being back with us again!   The first video above is of Tom asking for your support for the new regulations just as they are presented - No trout kill all year-round with all tackle - the voting link is in the caption below the video.  The 2nd video is of a few of the over-twenty buckets of trout the PA Fish and Boat Commission stocked in Pine at Slate Run on October first.  The 3rd video shows Jamie Schoonover catching a jumping brownie.  The fourth is of Ed Ryan with a fine rainbow from the base of Schoolhouse Riffle.  Next are two pictures: a rainbow and a brown Julie caught on "The Stretch."  And, the last is a video of a later-October caddis hatch on Tomb Flats.  Enjoy, there is much more planned for the future...  Come on up and get in on the action!

What's working...

Fishing has been great!  It is November and many trout are still being caught on the surface (more on that below in Just A Few More Casts...). The Slate Drake #12  and Blue-Winged Olive #16 are the major go-to flies. The Slate Drake is a perfect pattern now not just replicating the Isonychia, but also the Black Stone Fly which seems to be ever present, even hatching in the winter and climbing out onto the snow!  There are still caddis flies around, including the large October Caddis.  Add a dropper, or droppers to the Slate Drake and you are giving the trout more options.  Good droppers include the Micro Stone, Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, and the Copper John.  Emergers can also be used below the surface as droppers. Hoppers have worked as the surface fly instead of the Slate Drake.  There are a few who have had success trailing a nymph or emerger behind a Wooly Bugger off the bend of the hook.  Different things are working for different people, depending on preference and location.

Just a few more casts...

Fishing this first week in November has been amazing! "The Stretch" is not only loaded with trout, but they are really cooperating.  One angler who had just gotten back from the Beaverhead and had caught a lot of trout, said the fishing was better here!  He said he caught many, many trout out west on the BWO but they were all 19 inches and under. Here, he said, he caught the same amount of trout this week, but they ranged up into the 20s.  He caught them all on a dry BWO!  Then there were the anglers who had just returned from Patagonia and New Zealand, they had the same story - fishing was better here!  Imagine, I guess I'll save my airfare and lodging money and get another rod!
There are some more very interesting notes from anglers this week that beg for an answer.  Several anglers did very well on buggers fished near the bottom in the riffles, but they reported their catches were not the big German browns.  One of the anglers trailed nymphs off the bend of the bugger hook, but only caught many smaller 12 to 16 inch browns and rainbows.  Other anglers fished the slower water, or the crease, and mostly caught the largest trout.  They took them on top as well as under (16 to 20 inches dropped under the dry) and caught them on both the dropper and the dry.  Another person saw the trout rising and caught several on a Slate Drake, then switched to a BWO because that's what was all over the water.  He caught a lot of trout.  Below are two trout Julie caught with offerings on and under the surface.

All these anglers fished hard for their catches in certain locations and types of water.  Why would the larger fish have been closer to the top?  Maybe, the larger specimens got the pick of location and decided to take advantage of the number of flies closer to the surface.  Regardless, it would have been very interesting to test the answer out by switching locations and having the people using buggers fish the slower water and make their presentations closer to the surface.  Also, having the shallow presenters ply their imitations in the faster water. For myself, I caught less trout last week, but they were much larger in size - with a Slate Drake and two droppers, a Micro Stone, and a Pheasant Tail.  Guess we'll have to fish as much as possible this week to try to figure this out.  Oh, the problems trout fishing can present to us!
