Greetings!
Thank you for being back with us again! September and October have seen wonderful fishing on Pine here in the Delayed Harvest Stretch! The first video above is of Scott Yoder as he talks about his fishing. The second is an above-and-below water video of two of the many, many containers of big trout the shop stocked this fall. The third is Dave catching a brownie that took a Slate Drake from the surface - it was pushing 24 inches! The fourth is of John Strickler catching trout as he is guided by Juli Szur. The next is a picture of a Bald Eagle that landed in Pine below where Dave was fishing - the eagle squawked as he took a bath. The second picture is of a heron watching for a meal in the rain. The third picture is of a doe and two fawns that crossed Schoolhouse Riffle above Dave, and the last picture is of Tomb Flats. The last video shows Bill Logan catching a nice German Brown in the Tomb Flats Pool.

What's working...
What a great fall! A real bonus this year has been the numbers and variety of flies on the water, and, add the robust quantity of holdover trout from spring and last year together with the huge trout we stocked in September - the result is a fall that will long be remembered. It should be absolutely great fishing all the way to the New Year! If the water doesn't turn to ice, Dave's favorite months are January and February - with sunny afternoons. What's working? Try Slate Drakes (for the Slate Drake and a great imitation for the Black Stone), Caddis size 14-16, Cahills - cream, yellow, and orange, BWOs, Black Stones, Yellow Stones, midges, Hoppers, Lady Bugs, Psychos, ants, and crickets. Also, try dropping emergers and nymphs below the Slate Drake to give the trout more options. Hot dropper patterns are the Pheasant Tail, Slate Drake, Hare's Ear, Copper John, and Micro Stone. The Sculpin and Buggers are also producing! Hint...One angler caught over 20 trout on a Lady Bug! Another angler got 14 on the bottom with a small bead head Pheasant Tail!

Just a few more casts...
It is interesting working at the shop to say the least. We hear what is working, listen to differing perspectives on stream and water conditions, and we get to know so many different anglers from all across the Northeast, and lately, from across the country! We watch as elementary students stare in starry-eyed wonder at the fly display and listen intently as we discuss the life cycles of aquatic insects. They can't wait to get to the creek to turn rocks over and become immersed themselves in the subsurface mysteries taking place in Pine. Then, when Tom gives each young person a small Slate Run Fly Box and they can each choose two flies, it is like Christmas morning!
The most impressive element though, for me, is the joy most take in just being here. "I caught 5 trout, but the best part was just breathing the air and relaxing on 'The Stretch.'" For, by far, the greatest number of anglers, the Pine Creek/Slate Run experience is qualitative rather than quantitative. Many trout are caught by a lot of anglers, but the comments tend to be more about the riffles, the pools, the herons, the soaring eagles, the water-hitting osprey, the hatches, the flies, the otters, the flowers, the size and golden color of the trout, the peace that seems to consume one as the scene emerges, and the comments are about the sense of endless possibilities "The Stretch" engenders.

Late Evening at Tomb Flats...
In all four seasons Pine Creek and the surrounding hillsides provide a feeling of nature existing and providing, as it was meant to. Each of these facets of the environment we enjoy as we experience Schoolhouse Riffle, the Little Slate Pool, Tomb Flats, Black Walnut Bottom, or Cooney's Flats, are a part of an interconnected system able to sustain the organisms dependent on it. And, for most who enter the shop, "The Stretch" provides something for each that reaches deep inside - it can't be bought, the offering is endless, and it is free...
