    Delayed Harvest Extension Passed

Here is part of the Fish and Boat Commission Press Release: "...Commissioners approved a request to change the
regulations on a section of Pine Creek that will extend
the current 1.2 mile Delayed Harvest,
Artificial Lures
Only (DHALO) section
downstream of Slate Run
an
additional 1.6 miles to Bonnell Run..."

The new extension goes into effect Jan. 1, 2015. A very special thanks to all of you who took the time to vote in favor of The Extension. The support of angler conservationists like you has made the extension and conservation of this great trout habitat and its trout-holding legacy possible.

Tom will give an updated, detailed review/video in the August newsletter.

We consider it an honor to have you back again! And, this one is from Alaska - a little Alaska and more Pine Creek!  The first video above       is of my 10-year old granddaughter catching a large Arctic Grayling on a Jim Oman tied Slate Drake. The second is my brother Mike catching a trophy-size Arctic Grayling, also on a shop Slate Drake. The third is Gill Learn catching a nice Pine Creek trout on a dry. The fourth is of Dick Crawford catching a fish without even wading - what an excellent caster! The next is a picture of Ian Thomas and me as we talked - read below for a surprise! And the last is of George Yacina - watch his short video, it has happened to all of us... Enjoy, there is much more planned for the future!

What's working...
What a great time to fish! When the water gets lower and clear, an angler gets to relearn the bottom channels and dynamics that control the lower levels of the stream. Those same channels are still there even when the stream is higher. Another reason to enjoy this time of the year are the numbers of Cahills - cream, yellow, and orange. The BWOs are present as well as Slate Drakes and millions of midges. Terrestrials are another staple from now through fall with ants, crickets, grasshoppers, inch worms, and various frog patterns. Depending on water level and clarity, there are many opportunities to hook-up both underneath and on top. Right now fish early and late. If  the water gets warmer, let the trout alone in their cold-water retreats: tributary mouths, deep springs, and  cold groundwater seeps - instead, fish the runs! Slate and Cedar stay cold throughout their flow and trout can be caught at all times of the day. When temperatures drop and water levels rise with cooling rains, Pine's trout will redistribute to their normal haunts and it will be a good time to again enjoy Pine for trout.

Just a few more casts...

While on my way to fish more of Alaska's West Fork of the Chena River, I stopped at a favorite area where I like to take my grandchildren for rainbows and grayling. An officer asked to check licenses, and when he got to my paperwork, he smiled with both surprise and a little disbelief. He said, "That's Route 15 that crosses the Market Street Bridge into South Williamsport, isn't it?" Now I was the one with the surprised look! He continued with "I'm from Jersey Shore! I should have known where you are from, with your Slate Run Tackle Shop hat."
As it turns out, Ian Thomas is his name and he is the Chief Ranger of Alaska's Northern Area. We had a great talk, he said he grew up in Pine Creek, knew the area, and thought the Extension of the Delayed Harvest down to Bonnell Run was a great thing, anytime you can support the resource it is a good thing. In talking to Ian, it quickly became clear he is a conservationist and cares deeply about the fish and game and the habitat that sustains them.
I saw the ranger ask an angler to quickly return a grayling to the water instead of taking another picture. Alaska has so many grayling and so much water, but here was one person showing concern for the survival of one fish. Alaska is a great wilderness, it has untouched waters that may not see an angler for years. It also has areas with shoulder to shoulder fishermen closer to population centers. Meeting and listening to Ian made me understand even more deeply that the future of these fisheries (as well as ours in Pennsylvania) will last in perpetuity as long as we all keep the resource our priority.
