Kids Fishing on Pine Creek's Delayed Harvest at Slate Run
Kids Fishing on Pine Creek's Delayed Harvest at Slate Run

The smiles of pride and joy on these young anglers' faces in the video above are certainly infectious. And, their respect and admiration of conservation was never more poignant than the moment when each bent to the water and watched their catch dash back to Pine's depths. It is a scene played over and over again on the Delayed Harvest in all four seasons. These kids as well as most of the adults who ply the waters, whether it is for a once a year vacation or frequent trips, find so much more than just the catch in their whole experience.
Extending the Delayed Harvest and allowing more and more anglers to enjoy this very special cold water resource would be a prime example of The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's Mission to "Manage the resource for the resource." To allow a stretch of water capable of holding trout in all twelve months to be protected, allow the great fly hatches to sustain the fish, let the balance of nature support itself as the trout head upstream in the fall to enter the tributaries to spawn, and provide a haven for those seeking to be a part of this balance to observe, reflect, respect, and wonder at the beauty of nature available in our special Pennsylvania waters would be the epitome of any conservationist's dream.
These kids above, and kids much older but still young at heart, love Pine's Delayed Harvest - whether using flies or lures, they are a part of a cycle even bigger than fishing itself: the sights, the sounds, the birds, animals, riffles and pools, and of course the trout. They'll have the gift that the "The Stretch" gives for life! May all of us always be young enough to enjoy, appreciate, and conserve these treasures for now, and for the future.

What's working...
Many different flies have been working depending on the day they were fished. The sunny days with less wind when the water temperatures have climbed to the middle 50s, dry flies have been the favorite. The flies on the water have included the male and female Hendrickson, Quill Gordon, Blue Quill, Granom, BWOs, stone flies, and midges. Check out the last video to see some surface action on the Hendrickson. Days when the temperature dropped and the wind picked up seemed to be more productive underneath with the Pheasant Tail Switch Back, the Hares Ear, Prince, Copper John, beaded stones, Micro Stone Hot wire, and buggers or muddlers. Some are already having success with the Psycho both above and below the surface. The runs have had their share of successful stories with anglers using the Blue Quill and Royal Wulff. A few scattered March Browns have been spotted but not enough yet to get really excited about, although it may not be far off!
