March 3, 2014 Tackle Shop Newsletter

Dear (Contact First Name),
Our March newsletter is finally complete! Eight Videos! The first video above is of Tom talking about the March Trade-In and Camp Victory. The second is Tom again updating us on the Delayed Harvest Extension Proposal and he introduces a new Youth Fishing Program. The third is of the Pine Creek Glacier from above Ross Village to Slate Run Bridge. The fourth is a video of a black stone fly after it hatched onto the snow. The fifth is a video that was shown on WVIA-TV about Camp Victory. The sixth is a video of Slate Run Tackle Shop's Brown Trout Club stocking the Naval Run Pool. The seventh is of John McPhillips catching and releasing a beautiful native brookie in Cedar Run. And the eighth, is a video of Jed, Dave, and Jim Oman hunting Jim's North Country Outfitters' land for birds - including a great slow motion clip of a flushed pheasant. We hope you enjoy our email!

What's working...
As soon as the thick ice is gone, maybe in the next week with the warm-up coming, fishing and flies will be very interesting. I'm watching carefully to see how far behind we are, if at all, and what will be hatching. This is what was said at this time last year and it will probably be my initial thinking when Pine becomes liquid again.  "Baetis nymphs are emerging and trout are feeding on them quite actively.  They are taking the nymphs at varying depths, and a few dries have been taken from the surface that we have seen - of course there is a lot of activity we don't see - try #16-18.  A few anglers came in today and bought BWO dries and emergers as well as the split case nymph.  Interestingly, they also bought March Brown emergers and dries - I'm with them, it won't be long, and, a lot of us will be ready for the bigger hatches.  In the meanwhile, make sure you have a yellow stone, green caddis pupa, Sili Skin Pupa, micro hot-wire golden stone, bead head emerging sparkle caddis pupa, CDC Hares Ear Caddis, bead head yellow sally nymph, green weenie, rycophilia, a pheasant tail nymph, and a Micro-wire Prince.  A few green or black buggers are always a good idea.  I'm still fishing the nymphs or pupa dropped off the bend of the hook of a Slate Drake dry used as a strike indicator."  Back to the present...What a difference one year makes although I wouldn't bet against exactly the same flies in another week or week and a half!

Who would ever hitch a team of thoroughbred horses to a plow when the barn is full of mules and really big plow horses?  True, thoroughbreds are horses, so why shouldn't they do the work that the rest are expected to do? Because each has its own gifts and serves with its own purpose for the good of the whole. This is no different than Pine creek. Pine is a large stream with many, many different  heterogeneous sections, each with its own dynamics and ecosystems. Large sections of Pine are great for put and take fishing and are the work horses for the system allowing trout to survive until they are harvested. Then there are special sections, the thoroughbred sections, a prime example is the Delayed Harvest "Stretch" at Slate Run which not only allows the trout to survive, but provides cold water sanctuaries during times of heat stress and food abundance matching any western river. Trout not only survive in "The Stretch" year round, they prosper!
A farmer with his animals and machines, a carpenter with his tools, a surgeon with his scalpel, a plumber with his torch; they all function within the boundaries of what their individual resources will allow. If they don't, they soon go out of business having to often repurchase resources. A farmer would fight you before hitching the thoroughbred up to a plow, or, for that matter, a mule or work horse to a sulky. Let's manage our "Stretch"  and 1.6 miles of the adjacent water below for the resource. Manage the resource for the resource and it will provide abundantly. With Babb Creek adding its clean water to Pine since the 1990s, fly hatches are phenomenal, the huge trout are in place and provide action all year round, the springs and tributaries are strong and give cold water nourishment when needed, and anglers are coming from across the country to sample our very own Pine Creek. Let's extend the Delayed Harvest to allow for the increase in anglers, and protect the existing "Stretch" with no-kill. It doesn't seem like too much to ask for this very special section. And, it would be cherished water not only for now, but a priceless legacy for the future.
