December 24, 2013 Tackle Shop Newsletter
     Dear (Contact First Name),
Our Christmas Newsletter is here! Thanks for being with us again. The first video above is of Dave catching a very nice Brook trout on Pine just as the light faded. The second is of the Pa Fish and Boat Commission stocking Pine at the mouth of Little Slate - with Dick Crawford. The third is of Slate Run Tackle Shop's Brown Trout Club stocking behind the shop - with Vanessa Cabral and Matt Much. The fourth is a video of the great casting ability of Bill Ritter as he enjoys Dave's H2 at the Old Campground Pool. Next are a few pictures of Pine late this fall. And, the last is a short video of Al Bower as he is attached to a beautiful, jumping brown trout. We hope you enjoy our email! Remember, winter trout fishing will enter its two months of peak productivity beginning in January - it should be excellent this year!

What's working...

What is working is the same selection that made last winter on Pine the most memorable in all of my 67 years! And, that includes winter fishing the Paradise and Fishing Creek for years and years. Now my first pick is our own Delayed Harvest Stretch from Slate all the way downstream to Naval Run. The "stretch" is magic, especially in winter. The same seeps and springs and ground water entering at the base of the cliffs that keep the deeper water cold during the summer, also keeps the flows warmer in the winter. Right now the water is too high, but it will be lower and prime in a few days - it is full of trout; I'm looking forward to January.
What I will use is one of the shop's Slate Drake dry flies as a strike indicator. Off the bend of the hook I'll tie on two and a half feet of 4X tippet material and to that I'll cinch a size 14 beaded Yellow Stone nymph. Again, below that and off the bend of the hook another 2 and half feet of 4X tippet material. Tied to this is your bottom dropper and you have a selection to make, I've caught winter trout on them all. Here is a list with my favorite first: a bead head Micro Stone nymph, a bead head Prince, a Rhyacophila Larva, or simply another Yellow Stone or Black Stone. Also you may see BWOs so be ready with dries, soft hackles, and the old, trusty Rusty Spinner - yes, you'll see the occasional surface feed in shallower, slower water later on a sunny afternoon.
Buggers or sculpins can be good, but I like the nymphs, and I get to watch my Slate Drake riding the surface. Give it a try, you may be very surprised!

Just a few more casts...

The time is here...Winter Trout on Pine's Delayed Harvest Stretch!

An angler came into the shop about a week and a half ago - a few days before we started to get some floating slush ice on Pine. He had only about 2 hours before he had to leave his cabin for home. He said he was a novice fly fisherman but wanted to get on the stream one more time and maybe catch a trout. We went over the fly rig which was exactly like mentioned above in "What's Working." He was going down to the Old Campground Pool, and he was going to fish above where the slab rock starts. He decided on the yellow Stone under the Slate Drake with the Prince on the bottom. He was going to enter the water only to his ankles and cast just a short distance at first, into the slower moving water.
I lost track of time working in the shop with the close-out stock we were going to put on Ebay, when, a voice came from the top of the shop stairs, "It works, I caught a 16 inch brown on the first cast!" He walked down the steps as happy as a kid on Christmas morning! "It works.  I didn't get into the water much over my feet. The first cast was only about fifteen feet quartered upstream. The Slate Drake floated about half way through the drift and it was pulled under. I picked the tip up and had my first trout on - what a fighter, it was a 16 inch brown! I didn't get a trout every cast, but it didn't take many. I caught four browns in a row, and the 16 incher was the smallest. I'm back here because the fifth trout was the largest trout I ever saw and he broke me off. I'm here to buy more of the Yellow Stones."
He bought the rest of the size 12 stones - all of them! That was the only fly the trout took. "They are really hungry," he said. "There are so many trout!" He was such a pleasure. It was great seeing the birth of another believer in the beauty of Pine and its trout, and of all the possibilities in the quiet of winter. When the water comes down a little, and sun shines gold on the white and green and the myriad warm shades of brown, with the eagles soaring overhead and the trout moving into the shallows to feed on hatching stone flies, it is even better than May!
