August 23, 2013 Tackle Shop Newsletter
     Dear (Contact First Name),
Thanks for being with us again. We hope you enjoy the videos we have for you in this August newsletter. The first video above is of catching and returning a new Alaskan Record Arctic Grayling - caught on a Slate Drake using a Superfine Touch 804-4 rod with a Mirage II reel and 3D line. The second is feeding on Cedar Run's Tumbling Run Pool. The third is of trout in a lesser known Cedar Run Pool that always seems to have a pile of browns and brooks! The fourth is a video of Cedar Run's Red Rock Run bridge pool - who doesn't stop and look at this pool. The next is a picture of one of the Hexagenias that have been emerging on Pine in late evening. And, the last is a video of a beautiful grayling being caught by Matt Stecker in Alaska, notice the dorsal fin!

What's working...
It has been an amazing August! The water is low and clear, usual for this time of the year, although the water is much cooler than you would expect because of colder nights and more moderate days. The result...good trout fishing on Pine! Many who have been fishing the big stream have been asking the same question, "What are those big flies on Pine late in the evening?" They are Hexagenia Limbata in a size 8! And some evenings, the surface of the Delayed Harvest Stretch has come alive with trout feeding - some sipping on the surface, and others coming all the way out of the water as they chase emergers - far from what we think of as a typical August. What's on the water: Hexes, White flies (use a White Wulff), all three shades of the Light Cahill, BWOs, Yellow Stones at dark, Baetis, caddis, and light midges. Some have also had success on the green weenie, bass bugs (that caught trout), and various terrestrials.

Just a few more casts...

After getting back from Alaska and seeing my friends at "the shop," I couldn't wait to get down to the stretch from Slate to Little Slate, and on down to the old campground pool and Naval Run. Of course, I couldn't get past a walk on the bridge to see if I could spot any trout. There on the bridge was a young boy, probably seven or eight years old. I told him I always look from a certain spot on the bridge to see trout. He immediately smiled and became animated - I think he figured we were friends then because he was also looking for fish, "Come over here, look at that big brown trout," his voice excited. And, there it was, a brownie of at least 18 or 19 inches, brightly colored with big spots slowly swimming in the current. "There are a few smaller ones over here," he continued as if here were taking me on a tour, "And there are more bigger ones over there!"
Then there was a splash near the shadow below the bridge and my young friend hollered, "You cast behind him, you need to get further out and in front of him!" I crossed the bridge and looked down and there, near the abutment, was the young man's brother, maybe two years older. On the log lodged against the concrete pillar was his tackle box, spread open, with all the magical fishing tools any two boys could have imagined. "He's another fisherman," the younger angler told his brother, "He works at the tackle shop, probably wants to sell us some flies," the spotter from the bridge said. "We caught three this morning, and we'll catch some more," he told me confidently. "You should have seen all the trout last night, they were jumping all over. Tomorrow we are going to float on inner tubes and fish all the way down to the next riffle!" "Sounds really cool," I answered, remembering when I had done the same thing, a long time ago. "Come into the shop and let me know how you do," I said. As I walked back to the car I left them with, "Good luck, have fun, and be careful!"
I did my usual tour of the stretch and the Little Slate Pool, and saw a few Cahills and some midges, there were people swimming at the old campground so I didn't bother them. I figured I probably wouldn't see the young anglers again. Then the next afternoon, "We caught more this morning and then you should have seen the ones we caught on our float." They were as animated as the first time I saw them, and every bit as excited. The reporting didn't stop there. "We kept three yesterday but we put all the rest back! There wasn't anyone else there and we saw a lot of fish, mostly brown trout. The water was warmer where it was shallow, but there were spots that were really cold, that's where we caught the fish!"
We talked several more times over the next few days, they had a great time in the creek and caught a lot of trout. I thought what examples they were, exploring, questioning, challenging, enjoying, learning, respecting, and appreciating. What struck me most was their exuberance for Pine Creek, for its trout, and their understanding of its rarity and beauty. If our angling future is some day left to anglers and young people like them, we will be in good shape!

Zach brought Shannon all the way from Florida to Pine Creek and Slate Run to ask her one of the most important questions of their lives (even down on one knee Zach admits)...
Her answer: "Yes!"
Congratulations!

Patty Layser best pic
             Pattie Layser
There were a number of pictures of Pattie and she was mentioned in the "Just A Few More Casts" of the June 26, 2013 Newsletter. Since then, Pattie has passed on. All who knew Pattie are deeply saddened.  Pattie approached each day with exuberant joy, and she brought that joy and love of life to all those with whom she came in contact. We will still see Pattie in the earliest buds of spring, the pink of a sunrise, the shades of the changing leaves, the hoot of an owl, and the gold of a sunset. Pattie's spirit and its joy will live as long as there is beauty in nature and those who appreciate it.
