June 26, 2013 Tackle Shop Newsletter

Greetings!
This is the first Slate Run Tackle Shop Newsletter I've done from Alaska! Thanks for being with us again. I hope to include more Alaskan video along with those from Pine. The next stop in Alaska is above the arctic circle on the North Slope of the Brooks Range for Dolly Varden and grayling, after that it will be through the Alaskan Range to rivers of the Susitna Drainage then over to the Copper Drainage to pick up the Klutina and Gulkana. Along the way there are many no-name creeks that abound with fish. I hope you come along through the videos as my Helios2 and Superfine Touch rods will be tested along with their Mirage Reels. In the past I thought reels were for line storage, not so, they do a lot of the work - help bring the fish in, make them work as they run, and while doing this they protect the rod!
The first video above is my first Alaskan arctic grayling of the year (using a #12 March Brown dry). The second is of Eldon and Elmer Phillips along with Travis Karstetter catching trout at the old campground pool on Pine. The third is a video of a 21+ inch grayling in one of my favorite spots on the Chena's North Fork, along with a few feeding moose in a slough near-by. The next is a picture of Colton and Julie with Colton's first dry fly trout. The next four are pictures of Pattie Layser and great friends Julie and Rachel - they go with the "Just a few more casts..." story. And the last, is a video of many brown trout feeding in the old campground pool. There is much more to come in the future. We hope you enjoy our email!

What's working...
The flies that are now working are some of my favorites, and stand-bys throughout the warmer parts of the year. The Light Cahills are king now in cream, yellow, and orange. BWOs are ever present and, at times, are all the trout will take. Of course, the Slate Drake will take trout for some time to come. Don't forget the spinners in light and darker colors and emergers and nymphs that match the flies above. Also the terrestrials will be increasing with ants, crickets, grasshoppers, inch worms, lady bugs, and beetles. If the water rises, don't forget the streamers and buggers. Fish early and late on Pine when the fish come out of their cold water lies to eat. The runs need to be approached very carefully as they are much lower and clear! But, the challenge during the summer together with the pristine surroundings is a pleasure.

Pattie always exudes a happiness to those around her, as
this Pine Creek fish and its surroundings, and friends do to her.

Just a few more casts...

Many types of anglers come into the shop. Some young, some older, some with short hair, long hair, no hair, but the biggest differences have to do with expectancy. There are those who expect the average condition for a certain date to be present when they are on Pine - Green Drakes just before Memorial Day. Others expect dry flies to be the order of the day throughout May. There are those who have tackle shop quantities of flies in their vest and are amateur stream entomologists ready to solve the question of what's working. And, still others expect to catch trout the way they always have, regardless of method, because that is what has worked for them. All of these people go together to make up our angling world. We wouldn't want to change one of them! The difference is exciting and makes for diverse stories, not to mention an army of different kinds of anglers who love Pine Creek and the runs!
But, there is another type of person, one who operates without preconceived conditions. We see them in the store and along the creek, it is the angler who seems to radiate the same beauty, happiness, calm, and spirit that we usually associate with our beloved valley and its water. Julie Szur and I talked about these traits and Pattie Layser came immediately to mind . There can be no question. As you can see from the four pictures above, all of the fisherwomen pictured derive great pleasure from fly fishing, from friendship, and from their beautiful surroundings. Pattie is their center and one the rest look up to, as do all who know her. Whether in her waders, a dress and boots, or a quick run into the shop for a few more flies, she is a person who lights the room with her smile, and somehow makes the day a little more full. I think Pine gives so much to those who step into her waters, hear the birds' chorus, the rise of the trout, the hoot of the owl, and glimpse the horizon as evening transforms the gold of the sun to cerise and magenta. Pattie is one of those special people who gives more than she takes. She and her spirit as well as all those like her are one and the same with the spirit of the wild.
