Two fighting flies? You decide...
Two fighting flies? You decide...

Greetings!
Only two weekends are left of March Trade-In. Just bring in a blister-packed, push-button spinning outfit and you will get a 20% discount on all rods, reels, and line in the shop!  A rod for a rod, reel for reel, and line for line (bring in a blister-packed outfit and qualify for a 20% discount on a rod, reel, and line).  The donated equipment will be given to Camp Victory and provide a bit of fishing magic for the kids at Camp!
Tomorrow, Saturday, is the free spey casting demonstration/workshop at the shop. There are two free demos on Saturday: 10:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:00. Sunday there are two sessions for private lessons limited to four anglers in each group - call for details and to reserve your spot.
As you experience Pine this year, please take pictures of some of your catches, submit them to the shop through email, and we will put them on the photo gallery for everyone to enjoy. If you have pictures, bring them to the shop and we will scan them and return them immediately. Pictures for the gallery can be about our world of fishing and don't have to include the fish.
The time most have been waiting for is here. Contact us if you need any equipment, help and advice, or would just like to share a thought...

What's working...
The list is getting longer and a well equipped fly box should include nymphs and emergers as well as dries. The largest numbers of flies now are still the black stone, brown stone, and brown caddis in medium brown and a ginger brown. Hendricksons and red quills have started but are very light hatches as is the March Brown. The blue quill is present and seems to have been more abundant, so far, late in the afternoon when the sun is on the water on Slate and Cedar. Of course, the ever-present light and dark midges are abundant to keep us wondering what the trout are actually feeding on. Many of the stone flies came to shore by skittering across the surface a lot like a fast water boatman might do, then crawled up shore-side stones or vegetation. There is a lot of food available to the trout and they have been taking it underwater and from the surface by porpoising, swirling, and carefully sipping. The best time for the activity has been mid to late afternoon after the sun or daytime has nudged up the water temperature.

Final Casts...
This spring has shown me clearly that when I go to Pine looking for trout with a fly rod I tend to see less insect life than when I go with just my camera looking for pictures or video for the website and newsletter. I'm going to continue to go for the trout, but I believe I'll start with a more careful inspection of insect activity along the edges to see what the trout have been seeing. The picture above was taken on a blustery, windy, sunless day and most of the flies were sheltered downwind below the edges of rocks or thicker parts of vegetation. There were many varieties in close proximity.
I went back the next day, straight to the rocks at about the same time, there were no insects. That was when I spied the big fossil rock (see the photo gallery tab above) and got the picture, still a little amazed there were no flies. But, heading downstream I stood on a small hill overlooking the smooth pool, and there were the flies! They weren't in the rocks, they had matured and were now egg layers skidding, skipping, and gliding on the surface to assure continuity of their kind. That is where the insect videos for this newsletter came from. There were a few visible feeds in the quieter water.
Yesterday I went back for another look and the gusty wind was kicking the tops of small waves into white caps, there were stones and caddis in the air, and between gusts, when the water was calmer, you could see that some of the commotion was being caused by swirling trout taking the egg layers. I love catching trout and salmon, actually I just love casting and drifting a fly, but it is almost as great to watch and observe while doing the fishing. Our waters, the life within them, their trout, and each day we can be a part of it, rain, sleet, wind, cold, warmth, or sun, it is a gift more valuable than anyone can buy...

Thanks for being with us again.  We'll be back in a few weeks with more pictures of  our water, the trout, and our surroundings.  There will be more videos of flies as they hatch and fish as they feed.  Please call us or drop us an email to let us know what is on your mind - or call to find up-to-the-minute details on stream conditions and what is happening on the water.  Also, send us your fishing pictures for the gallery! Please, stay in touch with Pine, Slate, and Cedar by going to our website slaterun.com.
Thanks again for being with us!
