Pine Creek Trout and Emerging Nymphs
Pine Creek Trout and Emerging Nymphs
Notice the nymph moving quickly in the current, then, the clearer nymph emerging and swimming toward the surface (the middle bottom of the screen is where it pops up from the bottom then moves upward to the right). After the camera comes briefly to the surface and back down, watch the surface to see a nymph try to break the surface tension and bounce down a few inches and be taken along in the current.

March 3, 2013 Tackle Shop Newsletter

Greetings!
We are seeing more and more BWOs hatching now and sailing past us while we are on Pine.  Black stone flies are around showing varying wing shades in the light.  One afternoon the stone flies looked like small pieces of leaves skittering across the water, but, they were traveling into the wind until they got to shore and climbed onto vegetation - beautiful turquoise-between-veins wings.  It has been a winter and early spring of learning and of wonder to say the least.  The above video shows just a small part of what we have been observing almost daily.  Pine is healthy and alive with both trout and flies!  Come with us on our journey in this newsletter as we move toward warmer weather and even hotter action...  And, of course, bring in a blister-packed, push-button spinning outfit in trade for a 20% discount on all rods, reels, and line.  A rod for a rod, reel for reel, and line for line.  They will be donated to Camp Victory and provide a bit of fishing magic for the kids at Camp!

What's working...
Baetis nymphs are emerging and trout are feeding on them quite actively.  They are taking the nymphs at varying depths, and a few dries have been taken from the surface that we have seen - of course there is a lot of activity we don't see - try #16-18.  A few anglers came in today and bought BWO dries and emergers as well as the split case nymph.  Interestingly, they also bought March Brown emergers and dries - I'm with them, it won't be long, and, a lot of us will be ready for the bigger hatches.  In the meanwhile, make sure you have a yellow stone, green caddis pupa, Sili Skin Pupa, micro hot-wire golden stone, bead head emerging sparkle caddis pupa, CDC Hares Ear Caddis, bead head yellow sally nymph, green weenie, rycophilia, a pheasant tail nymph, and a Micro-wire Prince.  A few green or black buggers are always a good idea.  I'm still fishing the nymphs or pupa dropped off the bend of the hook of a Slate Drake dry used as a strike indicator.  There is now a second rod ready with a dry fly set-up.  Most of these flies have been used with success all winter and are still present and being taken by the trout.  Along with the March Brown, I am also carrying a Quill Gordon, tan caddis, black stone, and a blue quill.

Just a few more casts...
The video at the top of this newsletter provided a real surprise to me.  I took the video and expected to see trout, but not the hatching nymphs.  Actually it took many views at the editing table until I started to notice what was happening under the surface of Pine.  The speed was slowed down and new characters other than trout started to emerge.  Here I was, filming trout, right in front of me...I had been here all winter, observed and caught trout almost every week of the winter, but didn't expect to see what was apparent on the video. The water was slightly over 36 degrees and Pine was alive with movement and the life cycles of aquatic insects moving quickly to maturity.   And, the movement and life you see is contained in a small location in front of the camera not far from shore where the water warms the quickest - just think of how many nymphs were on the move on the whole creek! The last surprise of the edit was seeing one nymph unable to break the surface tension to escape, and actually bounce a few inches back under and be washed in the current - in a hatch no wonder there is so much activity below the surface!
The video below is from the next day at about 3:30.  I simply filmed a pod of trout.  And, upon editing, saw the side ways movement of the feeding trout under the surface with a very visible feed of one fish - easy to spot - on or just below the surface of Pine.  There were many feeds, and with some you could only see a slight movement to the side and the mouth opening for the take.  So many flies...and, if you were standing back or driving by with the old attitudes and beliefs about cold -water winter trout we all grew up with and believed about freestone streams, the scene would never have been observed and much less appreciated.  Pine is a great teacher with the greatest of resources.  My feeling is that it will be hard to wait until next year and another winter season.  I'll miss the sound of a steel hissing breeze through the Pines, fresh snow along the dark water, sun showing gold in the shallows, and a Slate Drake pulled under the slack water by a hard-sided trout fastened to my nymph.  Only nine more months...

Thanks for being with us again.  We'll be back in a few weeks with more March pictures of anglers on the water and the trout they catch.  Hopefully there will be more videos of flies as they hatch and fish as they feed.  Please call us or drop us an email to let us know what is on your mind - or call to find up-to-the-minute details on stream conditions and what is happening on the water.  Please, stay in touch with Pine, Slate, and Cedar by going to our website slaterun.com - we'll update as often as possible.
Thanks again for being with us!
