Greetings!
This appears to be the best fall Fly fishing for trout on Pine Creek anyone can remember! Pine has so many trout, and they are feeding on rather prolific hatches above and below the surface. It is amazing to see so many trout in one stretch. Everything a fly fisherman could want is here - great numbers of trout, varying hatches and spinner falls, terrestrials, wonderful water temperature around 55 degrees. Additionally, Pine at a lower flow level revealing many of its secrets... Our great year is moving through a spectacular fall and toward a winter where exceptional December and January trout fishing in open water may be unparalled. We are planning a clinic here at the shop, around Christmas, on winter trout fishing on freestone water. Many have said they will be here - the fish are already here! Check out the video toward the bottom of the newsletter to see the caddis flies last evening on Pine. |

Hatches
Keep in contact with the shop website and watch for the newsletter. We will be updating stream conditions almost daily so you are aware of conditions and what the trout are taking. We hope you can schedule some great fall fly fishing on Pine into your schedule (keep early winter fishing thoughts open as well). We'd love to share it with you! Below are a few flies that continue to hatch and some of their imitations: Slate Drake (still hatching last evening!) in a size 10-12 - dry and emerging; sulphurs; Light Cahills (cream, yellow, and orange variations - all seen last night) in size 12-16; a heptagenia (pale yellow) in a 16-18; BWO's in sizes 16-18; Brown Caddis in a 12-16 (wet and emerging caddis - thousands last night see video below); Yellow Caddis (Neophylax) in 14-16; dark moddled stone fly in a 12-14 - (see video below); Tricos in 18 (16 if you're lucky) and down to a 22; a white midge in 20-28; the brown-mottled October Caddis in 10-12 (Orvis' Yak); the Yellow Crane Fly in a 12 (Pine Creek Special); and corresponding nymphs, wets, and emergers to go with the dries. Add to these the ever-needed Stimulator in 8-10 - sometimes with a bead- head nymph dropper off the bend), occasional grasshopper, cricket, green weenie, and a few buggers, muddlers, and sculpins and you are just about set.

Tips
Fall trout fishing has been great to say the least. The water temperatures are hovering toward the middle 50s. Trout are not only in the normal feeding stations where food is funneled to them, they are also cruising much lower in the pools as well as positioning in shallower riffs leading into the deeper runs. The flies listed above are all producing from one place and time on the creek to another. Success in methods for catching the trout has been varied - some are catching trout on the surface on attractors while other are doing the same using a #14 caddis or a #18 yellow midge. While this is happening on top the water, still other are catching fish underneath using anything from beadhead nymphs to soft hackle emergers and buggers. While a dead drift has worked above and below the surface, a common ingredient to success has been to add a little action to the fly. See the "Just a few more casts" story below...

Little Slate Pool on Pine Creek below Slate Run
|
It had rained less than a tenth of an inch the night before, but enough that the quiet air carried a heavy pine scent mixed with damp earth. Anglers were silhouetted above on Schoolhouse riffle and below on the Little Slate Pool - the run between was open and that's where I started.
A #14 caddis was above the water and the surface was broken hear and there with a few swirls. My caddis landed as the day's light was beginning to grey. Sip, and the fly disappeared. Actually three casts produced three sips with the same result - three fall fish. The caddis came off and was replaced by an #8 Stimulator. More casts and all I got were swirls but no real takes...no fall fish either. As the shadows extended across the current and the fall's vividness turned into haze, the other anglers moved off. I slowly moved upstream to the mouth of Schoolhouse, the dark moving water became even more alive as time crept on.
Change flies? Nah... I already matched the hatch (as if it were spring), and caught chubs...Let's stick with the Stimulator and play! It turns out, what the trout wanted was movement. The fish have only so long to take or pass up the imitation - the current and movement of the emerging flies dictate quick instinct. The next cast put the Stimulator quartered upstream and immediately glided with the current. A twitch brought the big fly cross current and swirl, lifted rod, and the first evening trout was on. Several more casts produced more hook-ups... I don't think it was the Stimulator, the fly could have been most anything, as long as it was presented with motion and therefore sparked the quick attack they were using. What a great evening, and it was even better to get the free lesson from the browns.
I walked back up the hill in the dark... slight silver from stars highlighted the road and made the walk back a little easier. A great horned asked its question, "who," and next to the car, in the dark, I thought of how much richer I was for what Pine Creek gave to me once again...
