During the Society of American Florists "PR Boot Camp: Capture Media Attention for Valentine's Day & Beyond" webinar on Jan. 20, Sparks, SAF's vice president of marketing, gave a crash course that covered everything from how to come up with a news angle and craft a creative pitch for editors to how to prepare for an interview. The American Floral Endowment (AFE) wants to help you secure funding for your floriculture research project! AFE is now calling for research pre-proposal applications for 2016-2017 funding, due no later than June 1, 2015.

The primary research priorities are focused on floricultural crops - fresh cut flowers, fresh cut greens, flowering potted plants, foliage plants and bedding plants:

  • Biocontrol

  • Postharvest, can include shelf life, transportation, home or garden performance
Research projects can last from one to three years and any reasonable but justifiable budget will be considered. For the current 2015-2016 cycle, AFE is funding more than $280,000 in research.  Read more.

WomenWomen's Day, observed annually on March 8, is a day to honor and celebrate the achievements of women from around the world. With efforts dating back as early as 1908, the occasion is an official holiday in 28 countries.

It is a time to recognize the amazingly influential women throughout history and today - from business to politics to athletics to philanthropy to celebrity. And it is a time to celebrate the amazing women we interact with on a daily basis and to express respect, appreciation and love.

WF&FSA is part of Promote Women's Day, an industry-wide partnership to create awareness of International Women's Day, annually March 8, which is gaining traction in the U.S. The partnership includes Asocolflores, Association of Floral Importers of Florida (AFIF), Cal Flowers, California Cut Flower Commission (CCFC), Produce Marketing Association (PMA), Society of American Florists (SAF), and Wholesale Florists and Florist Suppliers Association (WF&FSA). Each organization is using their communication vehicles and resources to collectively educate industry members about this up-and-coming occasion's potential as a flower-buying opportunity, and is providing tools and tips on how to spread the word to the industry and consumers.
