HerbIN MEMORIAM: HERB MITCHELL

 

WF&FSA learned yesterday that Herb Mitchell passed away peacefully on September 25, 2014 in Naples, FL. Herb spent nearly all of his professional life as a Marketing Executive for various firms, including Teleflora, The John Henry Company and Jackson and Perkins Roses. A Certified Management Consultant, Herb founded and ran his own consulting firm in Newport Beach California for more than 20 years. Herb was a nationally-recognized floral designer who was part of the team that decorated the White House for the Bicentennial and designed the flowers for Trisha Nixon's wedding. Herb was the recipient of many distinguished awards. He was a President of AIFD (The American Institute of Floral Designers), a two-time Judge of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and Inducted into the Floriculture Hall of Fame in 1984. With more than 70 million users and a popularity and user group greater than Twitter, Pinterest garners >80% women with most popular topics of food, fashion and weddings. With this user base, it pays to put effort into Pinterest and be prepared for your brides when they start sharing pin boards.
 

Tips for Pinterest (4-5 hours to begin, maintain weekly/monthly)
 

Creating a pin board will take you 2-3 hours to start, and to keep current, you should consider updating on a weekly, or at least monthly basis. The best reason to use Pinterest? It has more than 70 million users, is one of the top five social media outlets and the fourth largest topic? Wedding flowers. Want to know more about Pinterest and how it compares? AFE Now Accepting Applications for $10,000 2015 Ecke Scholarship

 

Do you know a current or future graduate student with the skills and passion to become the next notable floriculture researcher or educator? If so, tell them to apply for the Paul Ecke Jr. M.S./Ph.D. Scholarship Program through the American Floral Endowment (AFE) now through Feb. 1, 2015. Applications are available online.

 

The scholarship honors the late Paul Ecke Jr. of Encinitas, Calif., who made significant contributions to the floriculture industry and believed strongly in research and education. Ecke was concerned about the future of floriculture and recognized that innovative researchers and educators are necessary for the continued success of the industry.

Applicants must be in the process of successfully completing either a B.S. or M.S. degree in horticulture or a related field, (e.g., agricultural engineering, entomology, agricultural marketing and economics, plant pathology, etc.) at a U.S. land-grant university and must have the intention of pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. degree on a full-time basis. AFE Partners With National Funeral Directors Association on New Study

 

The American Floral Endowment (AFE), through the Floral Marketing Research Fund (FMRF), is conducting a study with the National Funeral Directors Association to provide insight about how to improve the working relationship between florists and funeral directors and promote the many benefits of flowers and plants.

This study aims to:

  • Provide insight as to how retail florists and funeral directors can better work together
  • Determine how funeral directors feel about flowers/plants in the bereavement process
  • Improve or establish a mutually beneficial working relationship between funeral directors and florists
Promote the benefits that flowers and plants bring, not only to grieving families but also to the givers who send flowers to memorialize the deceased. Learn more.
