And What a Party It Was...

Over 200 people gathered at Burlington's Intervale Center on Sunday, September 22 to celebrate Local Motion and honor Chapin Spencer.  Local Motion's founder and executive director stepped down in August to become Director of Public Works for the City of Burlington.  It was a heck of a party, with music from Brett Hughes, food and beer from American Flatbread and others, facepainting and games for kids, and more.

Best of all, photographer Ben Sarle was on hand to take portraits of fans of Chapin and supporters of Local Motion with chalkboard messages about what they like best about the organization and its founder.  We've shared a selection of the photos above.  Watch for more in the weeks to come.

Burlington Gets $500K for Safer School Crossings

In a couple of years, walking and biking to school will be a whole lot safer for kids in Burlington's south end.  Burlington Public Works was awarded almost half a million dollars by the Vermont Agency of Transportation for improvements in the Five Sisters and Birchcliff neighborhoods.  Go Burlington DPW!

Here's what the project will include:
  • About 365 feet of new sidewalk on the north side of Birchcliff Parkway between Cherry Lane and Bittersweet Lane.  This will have the added benefit of slowing traffic down as it comes down the hill, as the sidewalk will replace asphalt and make the street substantially narrower.
  • Improved pedestrian crossings at Birchcliff Parkway / Cherry Lane, at Locust Street / Charlotte Street, and at Locust Street / Caroline Street.  These will likely include bump-out curbs, speed tables, and other features to shorten crossing distances and discourage speeding.
Big kudos to VTrans for putting real money into the Bike-Ped grant program.  They are making active transportation a priority, and it shows.  Let Jon Kaplan, VTrans' bike-ped coordinator, know that you support Vermont's investment in walking and biking!

And the Bike Challenge Winners Are...

The Vermont Bike Challenge wrapped up on September 30.  What a ride it's been!

Once again, Vermont led the country in the National Bike Challenge.  With over 2140 points per 1000 residents, Vermont beat the next state by over 700 points.  Way to go, Vermont!

Within Vermont, the competition was fierce for top honors.  Here are the winners.  These and others will all be getting certificates proclaiming their glory shortly!

  • Vermont Bike Champion: Stephen Barner (9040 points and 6,321 miles)
  • Top Community:  Jericho (13,276 points per 1000 residents)
  • Top Team:  AllEarth Renewables (95,560 points)
  • Top Workplace:  University of Vermont (114,534 points)

We're also pleased to announce the winners of our final round of gift certificates from Earl's Cyclery and from Skinny Pancake Congratulations to Jill Vickers, Nancy Klopfenstien, and Randi Brevik!

Finally, the big one.  Congratulations to our grand prize winner, Nathan Simpson!  Nathan won a $2,500 bicycling vacation from Sojourn Bicycling and Active Vacations.

Thanks to all our sponsors and to the 1200+ riders for making this year a huge success.  We'll see you all next year, bigger and better than ever.

Tell VT Transp. Board:  Walking & Biking Count!

The Vermont Transportation Board holds hearings every year to get feedback from Vermonters on how to improve our state's transportation system.  Walk-bike safety and access are high on the list of priorities for the Board.  They want to hear from you about how to make our streets and roads work better for people on foot and on bike.

Attend a hearing and tell the Transportation Board what's on your mind.  Hearings begin October 16 and continue through mid-November at sites across the state.  Click here for a list of Transportation Board hearing dates and locations.

Want to learn more about the Board and how it is working to improve walking and biking?  Check out last year's Transportation Board report, which has a hefty section on walk-bike issues and priorities.

Island Line Trail Featured in NYT Travel Section

The west coast of Ireland.  Paris.  And (wait for it) Vermont's Island Line.  These were the three featured biking destinations in a recent article on the front page (!!!) of the New York Times travel section.  (Best of all, the article was written by a Local Motion member.)  You can't ask for much better company than that!
That's Ireland on the left, Paris in the middle, and Vermont on the right.
So if you're hankering for some world-class bicycling this fall, you don't have to go far. And you never know who you'll run into on the Ferry.  Here is Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and his family enjoying a ride across the cut on Local Motion's Bike Ferry earlier this fall.

What a great way to spend a sunny day!  Come on out on Columbus Day weekend and have a world-class bike adventure of your own.

Bike Commuting up 10% Nationwide in 2012

This just in from the League of American Bicyclists:

New 2012 data released last week from the American Community Survey (ACS) confirmed what many people are seeing on the streets:  More people are commuting by bike! According to the ACS, there was an almost 10% increase in bike commuting from 2011 to 2012.

This is the largest year-on-year increase since 2007-2008, showing that people are choosing to use their bicycles for transportation not just in response to economic crisis, but because bicycles are leading the way to recovery. In total, there were 864,883 bike commuters in 2012.

It Pays to be a Local Motion Member...
From left to right: Terry Reynolds with Paul Budnitz of Budnitz Bicycles,
and Rachel Gitajn of Burton Snowboards with Susyn Dees

What does it mean to be a Local Motion member?  Well, for Terry Reynolds, it means a glorious set of new wheels from Budnitz Bicycles.  And for Susyn Dees, it means an amazing new snowboard from Burton.  Terry and Susan were the winners of our summer member drawing -- and boy, did they win big!

Local Motion's membership is at an all-time high -- well over 1200 member households at last count.  That's more members than the Bicycle Coalition of Los Angeles County!  Thanks to you, our members, we are transforming our region into a national leader for active recreation and transportation.  If you aren't a member already, join today!

(And you thought being a Local Motion member was only about scoring a 10% discount at area shops and getting the inside scoop on walk-bike events and happenings...)

Let Us Park Your Bike, Madam!

It's about time people on bikes got some respect.  From bike lanes that abruptly end when you need them most to crumbling shoulders filled with broken glass, sometimes the world doesn't work so well for biking.

Would a little red carpet treatment make your day go better?  Secure bike parking at your service!  Local Motion provided free valet bike parking at over 60 events in Burlington this year.  We treat you (and your bike) with the respect you deserve.

We'll be at the Burlington Farmer's Market every Saturday until the end of October!  Come on by.

We couldn't do any of this without our 60+ enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers and the coordinators who make Secure Bike Parking possible week after week, as well as the generous support of our many sponsors and partners:

Skirack, Burlington Department of Public Works, Skinny Pancake, City Market, Burlington Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Burlington Walk/Bike Council.

The Last Word...

...is a sad word this month.  Amy Dombroski, a native of Jericho and a world-class cyclocross racer, died last week in a collision with a truck during a training ride in Belgium.  This is on top of several serious crashes here in Vermont over the last few weeks.

Our hearts go out to her family and friends.  A memorial fund has been set up in her name to help her family and be used in her memory.  Donations can be mailed to:
