Bicycle Mechanics Courses
Starting 10/18 & 10/22!
Bike Recycle Vermont is pleased to announce the launch of our very own mechanics course. In an effort to improve the knowledge-base of our volunteers, we will be offering a 6 week, in-depth training course that will cover bicycle repair and maintenance. Classes will be offered on two different schedules:
Tuesdays, 5:30-7:00 pm :: 10/22 to 11/26
Fridays, 10:30-12:00 pm :: 10/18 to 12/6
.
Cost: $90 or minimum 25 hour volunteer mechanic commitment.
Participants must commit to attending each of the six scheduled classes. If you want to make a donation of time and money, all the better! All proceeds benefit Bike Recycle Vermont. Class size is limited to 7 participants. If you would like to sign up or have any other questions, email dan@localmotion.org.

Bon Voyage to BRV Staffer, Hanzi!
 | |
Hannah and Dan at the Sustainability Academy Bike Swap
|
Over the past year, BRV had the honor and privilege to host Hannah Ohlson as an Americorps member. Hannah wrapped up her year of service in mid-August and we were sad to see her go. In her time here, Hannah was immensely helpful with our Bike for Life Initiative and worked diligently to make BRV a welcoming space for women and non-male identified individuals. We're missing her already! We wish her the best in whatever the future holds. Enjoy the west, Hanzi.....just keep pedaling!

Pratit pays BRV a visit

Featured Customer:
Pratit Gurung
Pratit became a BRV customer in 2010. He enjoys riding year-round and commutes more than 5 miles each day.
BRV: When did you first hear about Bike Recycle Vermont?
Pratit: I learned about BRV through my Nepali neighbors who are refugees from Bhutan. I was unemployed (a stay-at-home dad taking care of my baby), and I couldn't afford to buy a new bike.
I don't think I would even be here in Vermont without the bike I got from BRV. Within two or three months of getting the bike, I got separated from my wife and I had to move out. With my bike, I was able to go to work and slowly improve my situation. Thank you, Bike Recycle Vermont, from the bottom of my heart!
BRV: What do you use your bike for?
Pratit: I commute to work at Saint Michael's College. The bike was very useful when I was working night shift, because the CCTA buses don't run after 11pm and I don't have a car. Now I work the day shift and bike to work most days. Apart from that, I use my bike to get around town, and I bring my kid home from daycare on the bike trailer. I ride all year round!
BRV: Tell us about a fun time you've had on your bike? Why do you bike?
Pratit: I've always enjoyed biking on the bike path along Lake Champlain and biking to the Intervale. When I am free, I usually bike all the way to the Colchester Causeway. I have the most fun when I have my almost four year-old son with me in his bike trailer. I also enjoy biking in the snow.
I bike because it's economical and good for the environment. Its good exercise for the body and mentally it helps me to relax, focus and remain positive no matter how tough the situation is. Biking reinvigorates the Zen spirit within me. It is a form of meditation. I feel more compassionate, romantic and optimistic after a bike ride.
