Residents Walk to Museum on New Sidewalk!
Kudos to Shelburne Museum, the Town of Shelburne and VTrans for collaborating on a new sidewalk along Route 7 to the Shelburne Museum!

The sidewalk offers Shelburne families an opportunity to walk to the museum and to the big events that the museum holds.  This past weekend the sidewalk was full of residents going to and from the Balloon and Craft Festival.

With Route 7 limited to a two-lane road through Shelburne village, the sidewalk eases congestion by giving museum goers another way to travel.  Read more.

Do Your Sidewalks Need Some Help?

new online tool from Advocacy Advance makes it easier to identify the federal transportation programs that could be used to pay for many types of walking and bicycling programs.

The tool also provides helpful information about each type of federal transportation funding source available for biking and walking projects, including what it is, how much funding is available, and who to approach for more information. Check it out.

Thanks to the CCRPC for distributing this info to town officials as well.

Volunteer for Bike Ferry, Win $100 Gift Certificate!

Thanks to Jay Catalano for this great pic!

It's been a great season so far for the Island Line Bike Ferry, which opened in June after its two-year flood-induced hiatus.  Watch the 7 Days' Stuck in Vermont video of the opening event here.  Thousands of people have taken advantage of the  great weather over the last month to get out on the lake and enjoy one of Vermont's most spectacular attractions!  Read a Washington Post article about the Bike Ferry and biking in the Islands here.

PRIZE DRAWING FOR VOLUNTEERS!

Every time you volunteer for a shift on the ferry up until Labor Day, you will be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift certificate from Skirack!  The more you volunteer, the better your chances.  Sign up on Volunteer Spot today!

You can get up-to-the-minute info on ferry service at www.bikeferry.org.  Pictures, celebrity sightings, and more!  (Check out the pic of Governor Dean enjoying the Island Line.)  Fare info here.  Like the ferry on Facebook or (better yet) follow us on Twitter for more info and updates.

Thank you to VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations for being the ferry's lead sponsor for the past 5 years!  Thanks also to our many public partners including the Town of Colchester, Town of South Hero, City of Burlington, VTrans, VT Fish & Wildlife, NRPC, CCRPC, and the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce.

What Are Those BTV Bike Path Markings?

Over the past few weeks, you might have noticed markings all over the Burlington Bike Path -- especially on the southern end.

Thanks to the voters' support last November, the Mayor's leadership, and the Parks Department's coordination, the City is beginning an exciting new step in the comprehensive upgrade of its aging path.

Following up from the 2012 Bike Path Improvement Feasibility Study, the City and its consultant, VHB, will be designing and permitting the path upgrades along the 7-mile path.  All the markings along the path are part of this effort.

More info is at: http://www.btvbikepath.com/.

Give Input on Path / Road Intersections!  The next path upgrade public meeting will focus on the design of the path/roadway intersections on August 20th, 6:30pm at the Burlington Police Dept.  Please come share your thoughts.  See meeting flyer here.

August Women's Rides

Want to make the most of the summer on your bike, but not so sure about doing it on your own? Sign up for a free women-only, woman-led ride with Local Motion and the Green Mountain Bike Club.

Check your bike in at Secure Bike Parking (a coat check for your bike!) and have a snack at the Farmer's Market.  Learn about gear, commuter routes, get road-riding tips.  Get pointers for riding on the road, commuter routes, and bike equipment.

Where: Meet at the Burlington Boat House.

Parking:  Park on Lake St. in a metered spot, or in the College St. municipal parking lot. Click here for map, which includes parking locations.

Women's Ride 8/31: Cruising to Yard Sales

Going to yard sales by bike is fun.  Your leader is a veteran yardsaler, and she'll map out a route of sales to ride to all around the city. Bring panniers (if you have them) and a backpack to stash your finds.  If something is too big to carry home on your bike, you're allowed to go back and pick it up by car.  ;-)

Where: Meet in the parking lot of the Public Health Lab/VT Dept of Health, 195 Colchester Ave., at the corner of East Avenue. Click here for map

Bike Challenge Update: Women Riding Strong

The 2nd annual National Bike Challenge is underway and Vermonters are again proving that we love to bike.  Best of all, Vermont's women bike riders are holding their own!

Women account for only about a quarter of bike riders nationally, but three of the top six riders in the Vermont Bike Challenge are women.  Check it out:

And here's the old news:  Vermonters are once again logging more trips and more miles per capita than anywhere else in the country.  We intend to keep it that way!  Here are the national standings as of early August (points are per thousand residents):

Haven't signed up yet?  It's not too late!  There are great prizes every month -- including gift certificates from Earl's Cyclery and Skinny Pancake -- and if you lead the pack for the month, you get your picture on the main page of the Challenge!

At the end of the season, everyone who reaches Gold level will be entered in a drawing for a FREE $2,500 bike tour vacation courtesy of Sojourn Bicycling & Active Vacations!
We'll also give out awards for most miles, most trips, top team, top business, and more.  Sign up here.

Where You Live Makes a Difference

Living in healthy places can mean up to a 25-year difference in life expectancy in some American communities

Thanks to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, new research is showing that the location where one lives can either increase or decrease one's life expectancy dramatically.  This map shows how much life expectancy varies from one part of the New Orleans metro area to another.  Read about the life expectancy study here.

Health disparities exist in Vermont as well, and helping to support active and healthy lifestyles is a key piece of the puzzle.  With support from the Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community, Local Motion is collaborating with the City of Burlington and other partners to map out an even more walkable, bikeable future for the Queen City.  From a walking-focused downtown to a continuous network of protected bike lanes, we're working to make walking and biking an easy choice for everyone.  Read more about the "Go for Gold" walk-bike campaign here.

Kids' health also varies by neighborhood.  That's why we're also working to expand the "Bike For Life" initiative with the Sustainability Academy and the Boys and Girls Club.  Thanks to a pilot project that was generously supported by VEIC and the Vermont Community Foundation, many more kids in Burlington's Old North End are now walking and biking to school.  Read more about Bike for Life here

Amtrak Trying Out Bikes on the Train
A passenger boards his bike on the Ethan Allen Express during the one-day demonstration in July.

It's been a frequent refrain from our members -- we'd like to take our bikes on the train!

Thanks to Amtrak, VTrans, Congressman Welch's office, VT Bike & Pedestrian Coalition and VT Rail Action Network, one-day bikes on board demonstrations have been taking place on various Amtrak routes this summer.

Local Motion continues to support and monitor this pilot project.

Thanks to the national bicycling organizations (League of American Bicyclists, Adventure Cycling Association and the Alliance for Biking and Walking) for writing a letter of support to Amtrak's efforts.  Thankfully, a few breakthroughs are in the works...

Hill Climb Raises Heart Rates & Cash for BRV

Any kid who could pedal up the hill faster than Brian from Tin Pot Ice Cream got free ice cream -- now that's an incentive!

Volunteers put together a fun-raising cycling 'hill climb' in Burlington's Old North End to benefit Bike Recycle Vermont.  Event pictures here.

Thirty-five cyclists turned out for the event's inaugural year to pedal up the steep Route 127 bike path hill from the Intervale to the Old North End.

There were many divisions -- a kids division, a cruiser bikes division and even a politicians division.  City Councilor Kevin Worden (Ward One) won that heat solidly in front of Councilor Max Tracy and Mayor Weinberger.

Thanks to former Local Motion staffer Todd Taylor for taking the lead in organizing what he says will be an annual event.

Want to help Bike Recycle Vermont out in some other way? Contact BRV manager Dan Hock with any questions dan@localmotion.org.

Slots Still Open for Reserving Bike Smart Trailer!

Kohl's Kids Bike Smart is your school's best resource for helping kids become great bike riders!  The program loans bike skills training equipment -- a secure trailer with 45 kids' bikes and all needed equipment -- to PE teachers and after-school programs at no cost (other than a nominal delivery fee).

"We used it last year and the kids absolutely loved it," said  Rick Dustin-Eichler, the principal of Dothan Brook School in White River Junction. "In fact, it was so powerful that we are in the process of purchasing some bikes to work into student's behavior plans."

To learn more about requesting the Kohl's Kids Bike Smart trailer for your school, visit www.kohlskidsbikesmart.com.  To sign up for both fall and spring go to the Fall and Spring 2013-2014 Kohl's Kids Bike Smart Request Form.
