Final Travel Talk of the Season: Walking Distance

By Bob & Martha Manning

Tuesday, April 9th
7:00pm - 9:00pm
Maglianero Cafe

Starting with the Long Trail, Burlington natives Bob and Martha Manning have been walking long-distance trails over the past decade.

In
their new book, Walking Distance: Extraordinary Hikes for Ordinary People, they write about why, how, and where to walk, and describe 30 of their favorite long-distance trails around the world. Their book has been endorsed by the Sierra Club, the Appalachian Mountain Club, and the American Hiking Society, and has been called "beautiful and inspiring."

Bob and Martha will talk about some of their favorite walks. You'll have a chance to ask questions and even purchase their book if you'd like!

A full complement of coffee beverages and some light snacks will be available for purchase. Guests are welcome to bring their own dinner to enjoy during the presentation.

Intervale XC Ski Season -- 15 Days of Active Fun!
After last season's snow-drought, even the modest 15 days of groomed skiing in BTV's Intervale seemed heaven-sent.

Thanks to an incredible team of volunteers and partners, we were able to provide free groomed XC skiing for the 5th year in a row.  The highlight was our January 6th Wintervale event that drew 400 folks to snowshoe, ski and play in BTV's Intervale.  See pictures here.

Sponsors: Vermont Design Works and Burlington Parks and Recreation.

Partners: Intervale Center, Catamount Trail Association, Skirack, Winooski Valley Park District, Intervale Community Farm and RunVermont.

Wanted to help?  Did you enjoy the skiing, but missed the opportunity to donate or volunteer?  You can still contribute here!

Stencils, Chocolate and Burma Shave Signs

Yes, these are Local Motion's signs of spring.

Johnson State College volunteers just stenciled these temporary messages on BTV streets.

Other volunteers are handing out chocolate to law abiding pedestrians and cyclists as part of our 'Sweet Streets' effort.

For drivers, we're setting up our Burma Shave safety signs to help motorists remember to "Drive 25 and Keep Kids Alive".

Thanks to the Governor's Highway Safety Program and VTrans for helping improve the safety and civility on our roadways.

Sustainability Academy Gets Biking!

Kids on bikes! Families on bikes!  Communities out and riding!  Sounds awesome, right?

Good news! Local Motion and the Sustainability Academy are on a mission to make this awesomeness happen!

This past Monday, we officially launched the Bike for Life with the delivery of 30 reconditioned bikes from Bike Recycle Vermont.  Hamming it up like pros, our intrepid staff Dan Hock, Hannah Ohlson, interns Jonathon Weber and Daniel Crespo rolled out on four of the bikes.

The bike delivery was met with a huge amount of enthusiasm from the audience of pre-schoolers to 5th graders.  These bikes will be used in field trips (sweet, right?!) and in PE class.

This project was made possible by generous funding from VEIC and the Vermont Community FoundationRead more...

Welcome New Board Members!

Rachel Gitajn -- As a dedicated commuter cyclist, mountain biker, and bike polo player, I'm extremely passionate about groups that support, advocate for, and help build the local cycling community.  No one does that better here than Local Motion!  I've committed a ton of time the past 7 years growing the commuter cycling scene at Burton Snowboards, and advocating for the local Bike Polo community.  I'm excited to join the Local Motion Board and expand my impact to the broader community.  I'm also extremely humbled and honored to learn from such a talented and diverse team of Board Members and Staff.

Rachel is a design engineer for Burton Snowboards.

Michael Jager -- Local Motion was a magnet for me because it is a positive culture changing group of dedicated, lead-by-example people. A group that is absolutely dedicated to educating individuals and communities about human power, potential and need. Local Motion propels positive change forward.  I'm extremely excited about the collaborative creative process ahead. Working toward new ways of educating and inspiring people in accessible ways and ideally creating a rapidly enlightened shift in how people view the way they move together with their communities and also in the world we are all a part of + responsible for.

Michael is the creative guru at Jager Di Paola Kemp Design & co-founded Maglianero

Joyce Gallimore -- I was drawn to Local Motion from the first week that my husband and I moved to Vermont. We discovered the joys of the Burlington recreation path on our first visit and we have been enjoying the expanding paths ever since. The leaders and members are enthusiastic, upbeat and caring individuals who like to enjoy the outdoors and to lead healthy lifestyles. I am thrilled to be part of the organization's mission to create as many ways as possible for people to use their personal energy to explore the area, commute and spend time with each other.

Joyce is a health care consultant who serves on the board of the Vermont Public Health Association and also serves on the planning committee for Vermont's annual Worksite Wellness Conference

Luis Vivanco -- As a Burlingtonian, bike nut, randonneur, everyday transportation cyclist -- and parent of young transportation cyclists -- I benefit everyday from Local Motion's accomplishments, and I have long felt the need to pitch in and help advance this cause. I also happen to be a scholar who studies and teaches about urban bicycle mobility, and I appreciate how Local Motion's work is situated at the intersection of so many of the Big Issues of our time: obesity, environmental sustainability, quality of life, the effects of automobile-centered sprawl on all of us, and others. I am a big believer in people power: the ability of citizens to make social change, and so a key agenda item for me is invigorating, growing, and diversifying our membership in ways that will more deeply engage us all in the advocacy.  It just so happens that right now, a lot of leaders are actually listening, so we need to take advantage of this moment.

Luis is an anthropology professor at the UVM and has just published a book Reconsidering the Bicycle
