Travel Talks, Part Deux: Cycling in S. America
Presented by Dan Hock

It was the Year of the Tiger! On December 28th, 2010, five gringos armed with a brand new map departed a snow-covered New York City en route to Santiago de Chile. With very little planning -- and a lot of excitement -- the group was ready to explore.
During the next six months, these intrepid travelers cycled as far south as Torres del Paine in Chilean Patagonia, and as far north as Bogota, Colombia -- logging over 4,500 miles in the process. By the time they reached Bogota, just two skinny guys with terrible haircuts were left standing.
Join us for a night of stories and photos from a curious adventure!
Tuesday, February 12th 7:00pm - 9:00pm Maglianero Cafe
Join the Facebook event.
A full complement of coffee beverages will be available for purchase. Additionally, you're welcome to bring dinner to enjoy during the presentation!
See photos from Glenn Eames's presentation on Cuba -- our first Travel Talk of the season. He packed the house! |
Will You Make 2013 a Big Year for Big Trails? Vermont's great trails don't just get built by accident.
The great places we have to hike, bike, ski, run and paddle exist due to the hard work of so many groups and people. 2013 is poised to a be huge year for some really big trail visions -- and Local Motion encourages you to share your time and talents to make them happen! Help Local Kids Attend Youth Bike Summit in NYC!
Seth became involved with Local Motion when he began volunteering at Bike Recycle Vermont three years ago, as a freshman at Burlington High School. He now works at Local Motion as a Trailside Center Ambassador, and helps maintain our rental fleet. Seth's continued commitment to our nonprofit mission, and bicycling in general, have supported his candidacy for this year's Youth Bike Summit. Can YOU help Seth and other area youth attend?
On February 15th, a delegation of seven people from Bike Recycle Vermont will be on its way to the third annual Youth Bike Summit in Manhattan. The delegation comprises five youth involved at the shop, as well as shop manager Dan Hock, and assistant shop manager Hannah Ohlson. This weekend-long summit, hosted by Recycle-A-Bicycle, presents an excellent opportunity for youth involved here at BRV.
This gathering will bring together young people from across the US to participate in workshops focused on youth, bicycles, education, and advocacy. Participants will explore ways in which the bicycle is a safe and legitimate form of transportation for today's youth. Watch a video created following last year's Youth Bike Summit.
You can help foster the next generation of sustainable transportation advocates! An anonymous benefactor will generously match every dollar donated for this purpose, up to $600! Special consideration will be given to low-income youth.
We're almost there! We've already raised $400 of the $600, and are just shy of our $1,200 total. With your help, we can reach our goal! Read more ... |
Create Complete Streets in Your Town!
Want to make your town's streets better for walking and biking?
Check out AARP Vermont's new Complete Streets: A Guide for Vermont Communities. This guidance document provides information on the requirements of VT's Complete Streets legislation. With the support of many Vermont organizations, Complete Streets legislation was passed in 2011 and requires that the needs of all users of all ages (drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and public transit) be considered in all transportation projects and project phases. By educating Vermont community leaders and providing examples of Complete Streets treatments we hope this document will serve as an important resource for implementation of the act. This guide was made possible with funding from the Vermont Department of Health's Fit and Healthy Vermonters Program. Technical expertise and oversight was provided by AARP Vermont, VTrans, Vermont Department of Economic, Housing and Community Development, Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission, and the Vermont League of Cities and Towns. A limited number of printed copies are available at AARP. Please email Jennifer Wallace-Brodeur or call (802) 951-1313 to request a hard copy. |

Isle La Motte School First in Vermont to Achieve Safe Routes to School Platinum Status!
Congratulations to Isle La Motte School for earning Platinum Level for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) -- the first school in Vermont to achieve that status!
Platinum SRTS status is the highest level of school partnerships in SRTS. This means that the school has integrated the program into the school's culture: The school has a reward system for children walking and biking to school; they engage the school staff to actively participate in the SRTS program; include town officials; provide the Walk Smart/ Bike Smart curriculum to all of the students in their classrooms; and post the school's SRTS travel plan on their website. Students share in the SRTS planning and the school has shared its successes with other schools locally. Read more ...

A January Bike Ride
On Tuesday, January 15 I set off for a typical winter ride. Sometimes I ride just for exercise and the pleasure of being outside, but this was more a more practical expedition. The beauty of a bike is that it is equally well designed for both kinds of riding -- and even on the most mundane trip, there is still a sense of freedom and the exhilaration of physical activity. As I left my house, the temperature hovered around freezing and it was a sunny day. My first stop was the Winooski post office, where I leaned my bike against the wall just outside the door.
