Glenn Eames Presents: Cycling in Post-Oil Cuba
Join us this Tuesday, January 8th, for the re-launch of our popular Travel Talks series!
What: Travel Talks When: Tuesday, 1/8 from 7pm - 9pm Where: Maglianero, 47 Maple St. BTV
In this first of four monthly events, Glenn Eames of the Old Spokes Home will recount his experiences cycling in Cuba:
In 1992, a small group of "Cyclepaths" traveled to Havana, Cuba to attend a conference titled "Cycling, an option for the 21st Century." Here they discovered Cuba -- a country that had suddenly found itself with limited petroleum resources at the height of the Special Period. Their solution? Import 750,000 Chinese Roadster Bicycles and convert to a pedal-powered society.
This is a can't-miss event! A variety of coffee beverages, and a limited amount of light fare, will be available for purchase.
Travel Talks will continue on the second Tuesday of each month through April. Be sure to check our online Events Calendar for more details. |
Converting a Public Hazard into an Asset
Thanks to a $140,000 sidewalk grant from the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC), Essex Junction is well more than a third of the way toward funding a new multi-use path between the village center and the high school. In the process, the community hopes to turn one of its "problem areas" into a major community asset.
The rail line from the Amtrak station up to North Street in Essex Junction is a preferred walking route for Essex High School students to walk to the village center. The problem is, the end of the school day lines up with the schedule of a train that comes through the village each afternoon, which creates a very unsafe situation for students. It's also a magnet for somewhat unsavory activities due to a lack of lighting.

Biking & Walking Supports 1,400 Jobs in VT
We intuitively know that walking and bicycling are good for Vermont's economy, health and quality of life -- but now we have more data to back up this assertion. In 2012, the State of Vermont completed an economic impact study of walking and bicycling

- Running & Biking Events Bring Attract 16,000 Participants: The 40 major running and bicycling events attracted over 16,000 participants. Combined with family and friends, they spent over $6M in Vermont. This spending supports 160 workers with $4.7M in labor earnings.

Cold Weather Riding
I first started riding through the winter in the 80's. At that time, there was only one other winter rider in Burlington. Most people thought we were crazy. A lot has changed since then, and winter riders are everywhere. Here is some advice for those who want to explore the pleasures and challenges of cold weather riding.
- Winter riding often means riding at night. Make sure you have reflective clothing and front and back lights. When the roads are narrow because of snow, it is essential to be visible.
- Dress carefully and make sure you have backup gear should it suddenly get colder than expected. Go outside and feel the temperature. Sunny days can be deceiving and under dressing means an uncomfortable ride.
