Featured Earn-A-Bike Recipient: Joey
 | |
Joey came to Bike Recycle after school for 2 weeks with his mentor.
|
In November, Joey (age 14) participated in Bike Recycle Vermont's Earn-A-Bike program. Participants volunteer for a total of 10 hours in exchange for a bicycle, and learned skills in bike anatomy, fixing flats, rules of the road, safety and bike maintenance. Here's what he thought about his time at Bike Recycle. BRV: What did you like about volunteering at Bike Recycle? Joey: What I liked about volunteering here was the fact that the staff was very kind and welcoming. It was a thrill to be here and I suggest that young people who like to go biking should find out more about bikes by volunteering here. BRV: What was the funniest thing that happened during Earn-A-Bike? Joey: The funniest thing that happened here was probably taking a bike that was completely broken and putting it in the back. It was fun to watch it just sit there. BRV: What was the most interesting thing you learned? Joey: Learning to fix a crank. BRV: How's your new bike? Joey: Good. So far what I've done with my new bike is go pretty much everywhere in Winooski and Burlington.

Featured Volunteer: Mike Sumner
 | Dan and Mike bond over their love of kids bikes.
|
Mike from Burlington has been volunteering at Bike Recycle Vermont for five months. He's always willing to help with the many tasks that keep BRV running- fixing bikes, hauling trash, sorting parts, and others. We asked him a few questions about his experience. BRV: What is your favorite part about volunteering at Bike Recycle? Mike: That it helps somebody get a good safe bike. Meeting new people, learning a new trade, being around nice people. BRV: What project are you most proud of that you've worked on at Bike Recycle? Mike: Repairing bikes! And hauling scrap metal to Queen City Steel on the bike trailer. BRV: What have you learned since you began volunteering at Bike Recycle? Mike: I've learned how to treat people better, I've learned how to repair my own bike, and I also learned that it feels good to volunteer.

Honoring our Volunteers
At the end of November we held a volunteer appreciation party here at Bike Recycle. Over 50 volunteers came to relax, socialize and eat. While it snowed outside, we celebrated with chili, pie and hot apple cider.
Bike Recycle's work would not be possible without the tireless work of the volunteers that come in to help refurbish bikes, work with bike recipients, help with shop upkeep. Thank you for your continued dedication to our shop! The time you give to Bike Recycle is critical to our ability to be a vibrant, successful shop. Thank you!

Over the last month volunteer Rob Connor has been working to help us re-envision and renovate the bike storage room at Bike Recycle. The result is a permanent Bike Recycle Designs workspace, equipped with all the supplies and materials needed to make our earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and other products. If you're interested in coming to use the space,
