Click here to see more causeway construction photos! Generous donations to The Big Fix have enabled repairs to continue on the 3-mile Colchester Causeway! Contractor SD Ireland is making good progress repairing the path and replacing the armor stones. The causeway will continue to be closed through October. Please respect the trail closure so work can continue expeditiously.
We're getting so close!
To complete repairs along the flood-damaged Island Line Trail, and to relaunch expanded Bike Ferry service, we need your help to raise the final $5,000 for The Big Fix campaign. We've already raised $1.49M!
Community Groups Step Up Too! Thank you RunVermont for your very generous $10,000 gift to help repair the Burlington Path. Thanks also to Green Mountain Bike Club for your challenge grant last month. It helped raise over $2,000! |

BTV Residents Vote on Path Upgrades Nov 6
There are two ballot items that will start a multi-year process of bringing our 25-year-old path up to modern standards.
Item 2: Whether the City should use Waterfront 'TIF' funding for waterfront improvements (~$2M for bike path) -- this does not impact residential tax payers
Item 3: Whether the City should raise the property tax rate a 1/2 cent for maintenance and improvement of the path -- generating ~$180,000 / year.
1) Attend a Friends meeting: Thurs, Oct 11, 5:30pm, 77 College Street 2) Write a letter to the editor to the Burlington Free Press 3) Make a donation to the Friends to help with the campaign

Essex Junction Wants to Walk & Bike More
Good things happen when lots of people put their heads together and share ideas.
That's exactly what happened on September 15, when 30 people showed up for a community walk-bike workshop in Essex Junction. They spent an hour reviewing, adding to, and voting for ideas for making Essex Junction an even better place to walk and bike. Some of the highlights: - People are really excited about making it easier to walk and bike to school, and voted heavily for school-organized walking school buses and bike trains.
- Bikeable connections to surrounding communities were also popular, with particular interest in a path along the Route 15 corridor.
- Most folks are largely happy with the sidewalk network as it is, but they want better options for getting across busy intersections.
You can read the full report here. Want to add your thoughts to the mix? Email Jason Van Driesche at jason@localmotion.org. |
Standing Room Only at Legends of the Line
What a wonderful evening! 225 attendees packed the Main Street Landing Film House on September 19 to take a 111-year historical journey along the Island Line.
It was a great night of storytelling with a dozen people weaving together tales of the rail years and the trail years.
Missed the event? You can watch it online!
Find out why this rail line was built through Lake Champlain? Who first proposed turning it into a trail? What bike path battle went all the way to the US Supreme Court? What is happening with the flood repairs?
The event is part of The Big Fix -- a campaign to repair the trail and relaunch expanded Bike Ferry service. Thank you to our sponsors: Main Street Landing, Shanty on the Shore, ECHO, CCTV, Lake Champlain Islands Chamber and Urban Rhino. Thank you to our presenters: Laz Scangus, Jim Jones, Bill Hauke, Peg Clark, Rick Sharp, Brian Costello, Joe McNeil and Michael Monte! |

VT Bike Challenge Awards Announced Oct 21!

As you heard last month, the Vermont Bike Challenge generated some real excitement this summer! With 1277 riders, 105 teams, and 443,717 miles biked, it was a total blast. (And don't forget that Vermont ran away with the top spot in the National Bike Challenge!)

Now that it's over, you may be wondering who won all the prizes??? We'll let everyone know at Local Motion's Annual Party on October 21st (details at top of newsletter). We'll announce: - The top bike rider in Vermont. (Hint: he lives in the Upper Valley and has a really cool name.)
- The Vermont company that fielded the top team in the Challenge -- and even paid its employees to take the final day of the Challenge off from work if they spent the day on their bikes. (Hint: they install solar energy systems.)
- The lucky participants who will get one of the remaining $25 gift certificates donated by Earl's Cyclery. (All kinds of cool gear can be had for $25!)
And you are of course on the edge of your seat about who is going to win the free bicycling vacation from Sojourn Bicycling and Active Vacations. (Who wouldn't want to bike between country inns and have someone else carry your stuff?) Thank you Sojourn!!! |
