NDP alumna studies in India and Spain
Morgan Hoxsie '10 (NDP)

Morgan Hoxsie, a graduate of 2010, was featured in the November/December issue of Notre Dame's Blarney Stone publication. Read her story below.

It isn't too often that a college student can fill out a double major at Michigan State University by traveling abroad. But that is exactly what 2010 Notre Dame Prep graduate Morgan Hoxsie did during the last two summers.

This past June and July, Hoxsie worked in international research in Chennai, India, at the Center of Non-Destructive Evaluation at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Madras. Her main project consisted of working with glass-epoxy samples to determine the effect an impact on the material has on its performance and stress/strain. Full Story
1963 Goodfellows Game between ND and Denby  video posted

The Goodfellows Game was an annual high school football game played from 1938 to 1967 that pitted the winner of the Detroit Catholic League against the winner of Detroit's Public School League. In the 1963 game, Harper Woods Notre Dame, which finished with a 6-1 record in league play, came up against a tough Denby High School team in a real defensive "slobberknocker" at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Denby came out on top 7-0 and its fans proceeded to tear down the goal posts on one end of the field.

It was the second year at Notre Dame for legendary head coach Walt ("Bazy") Bazylewicz, who also led the 1962 team to a Central Division championship. Coach Bazylewicz coached in the Catholic League for many years and later served as director of the league for 15 more, longer than any other CHSL director.

A video compilation of the 1963 Goodfellows Game has been posted to NDPMA's web site. Click here to watch.

Twenty-four alumni were among one-hundred and twelve donors who were honored on Wednesday, October 30, at Notre Dame's annual St. Peter Chanel Society donor appreciation dinner, which was held at the San Marino Club in Troy, Mich.

The St. Peter Chanel Society dinner recognizes individuals whose support of NDPMA and enthusiasm for its role in private, Catholic education is exceptional. Through their contributions of leadership gifts to the 2012-2013 Notre Dame Annual Fund and other special projects, these alumni demonstrate a deep and genuine concern for the school and contribute substantially to support its continued excellence and fiscal soundness, with individual gifts ranging from $1,000 to $25,000.

At this year's dinner, head of school Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m. '65 (NDHS) and Notre Dame Prep senior Gwen Keller presented their thoughts on Notre Dame, its mission, its academics and the International Baccalaureate program. Notre Dame Campus Ministry goes for peer-to-peer

Changes within Notre Dame's campus ministry department are having a big effect on the students in all three divisions, says Cathy Zuccaro, campus ministry director. No longer are the students of Notre Dame content with just being "ministered" by Zuccaro and her department colleagues.

"Because students play a vital role in the faith formation of their peers, it is necessary that we provide an opportunity for our students to minister to each other in the school and to those outside of school." So says a line from a new mission statement that helps define a new focus on peer ministry at Notre Dame this year. Full Story

NDP takes regional title and league crown in volleyball

Head coach Betty Wroubel earned her 1200th win last night as Notre Dame Prep won their second straight and seventh overall regional title as the Irish downed Hazel Park in straight sets 25-8, 25-6, 25-12. The Irish (59-2-1) banged out 49 kills, from seven different attackers on their way to the win. Katherine Carlson led the way with 15 kills while Dani McCormick added nine and Jenna Sassack had eight. From the service line,

Bella Bucchi led all scorers with 17 points, Emma Kowalkowski added 10 and Carlson nine. The Irish now advance to the MHSAA Class B quarterfinal match against North Branch, which defeated Armada in straight sets.

Notre Dame Prep's varsity volleyball team won its first Catholic league Championship since 2007 with a straight-set victory over Marian on October 28 at Madonna University.

Notre Dame's Schwegman is High School Heisman winner

Notre Dame senior Max Schwegman was named a state winner in the Wendy's High School Heisman program, one of only two from Michigan. These recognized students will now advance to compete for the national award that celebrates their hard work, dedication in athletics, academics and community leadership.

Elianna Shwayder from Saline High School was the other Michigan student winning the state award. Only one girl and one boy from each state and the District of Columbia are chosen as winners of this award.

"State winners are exceptional examples of well-rounded students who excel academically, lead and serve others with the passion and persistence of a Heisman winner," said Archie Griffin, two-time collegiate Heisman Trophy winner. "While these students are recognized as leaders in their communities, the Wendy's High School Heisman Award gives them the national recognition their achievements have earned."
ISACS Response Accepted, School Remains Fully Accredited

The Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) Accreditation Review Committee has reviewed and accepted NDPMA's "reaction report," or response to ISACS recommendations after last year's evaluation visit, and determined that the school continues to be a fully accredited member school in good standing.

Head of School Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m., thanked the school's ISACS steering committee and said it's another positive step in Notre Dame's re-accreditation process. "The next step for us in this re-accreditation process is a progress report due to ISACS in two years," he said. "And we also will need to conduct an opinion audit for them during fiscal year 2013-14."

ISACS is a membership organization of more than 230 independent schools from 13 states in the U.S. Midwest region. Notre Dame has been ISACS-accredited since the school opened in 1994 and shares such accreditation with Cranbrook, Country Day, Grosse Pointe Academy and The Roeper School.
