Alumna graduates from University of Michigan after heart transplant
Andrea Bierema '08 (NDP)

Andrea Bierema of Oakland Township became a college graduate. Three years ago, she wasn't sure she was going to live. Bierema, a University of Michigan psychology major, suffered a massive heart attack her sophomore year of college and needed a heart transplant when she was only 19 years old.
She was one of the many students excited to graduate college this spring, but this 22-year-old woman has a success story that extends beyond the classroom. Bierema was healthy throughout her four years at Notre Dame Preparatory High School until she graduated in 2008. (Source: Oakland Press.) Full Story

The opening reception on Friday, September 6, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. will be a birthday party for John, featuring a Cage-inspired performance by Detroit performance writer Stephen Dueweke '76 (NDHS). The exhibition runs September 7 - October 19, 2013. (Source: Collegeforcreativestudies.edu)

Notre Dame expands campus and IB program

In the last three years, Notre Dame Preparatory School has graduated 100 students with International Baccalaureate degrees - the only Catholic school in the state that offers the IB program and the only one in the nation that provides it from elementary through high school.

This fall, Notre Dame's lower division students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade will move to the main campus at Giddings and Walton in Pontiac, near the main Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy campus run by Marist Fathers and Brothers. This will make it easier for teachers to work together to create a smooth transition in the demanding IB teaching and learning through all grades, officials said.
The relocation of the lower division from St. Benedict School's building in Waterford Township to the new school now almost completely constructed has already increased enrollment by 20 students to 159, said the Rev. Leon M. Olszamowski, president.

Notre Dame senior chosen as cantor for World Youth Day events
NDP senior, Brittany Johnson, was picked to be a cantor at World Youth Day for young adults held last month at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit. Pope Francis celebrated International World Youth Day July 27-28 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For those in the United States who could not travel to Brazil, Chicago held a World Youth Day for teens and Detroit hosted events for young adults.
Johnson is a member of the Archdiocese of Detroit choir and since she is its youngest member, she was asked to cantor for Holy Hour with Bishop Donald Hanchon on July 27, and for mass with Archbishop Allen Vigneron and Bishop Arturo Cepeda on July 28 at the cathedral. "It was an honor to be asked to participate in such a meaningful event for young people," Johnson said.
