Dear  ,

Greetings from the Notre Dame Alumni Office, and Happy Summer!

While Notre Dame students are home for the summer, our graduates can continue to enjoy fun-filled events through the alumni association. We look forward to seeing nearly 80 of our alumni at our annual Detroit Tigers outing later this month!

Here on campus, construction continues on our new lower-division school building with completion scheduled for mid-August. The Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations has moved to "Fr. Colin House" at 1389 Giddings Road, a renovated 103-year-old home situated across from the main Pontiac campus and adjacent to the new lower-division. We look forward to hosting alumni gatherings at our new, quaint space in the near future.

As we prepare the Fall 2013 issue of IRISH magazine, we welcome all alumni to share their updates for inclusion in Class Notes. Your classmates will enjoy hearing from you! Email your updates before August 10 to [email protected] or visit www.ndpma.org/update.

Irish Blessings,

Notre Dame loses longtime educator and friend
Harold "Hal" Rice passes away at the age of 80

The Notre Dame community lost a beloved friend this week as longtime educator and administrator Harold (Hal) Rice passed away Sunday at his home in Warren. According to his daughter, Terri Krasicky, he died peacefully, sleeping in his chair.

Rice spent 33 years as a faculty member at Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods and then nearly 10 years at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Pontiac. He retired in 2009 but still continued to teach part time at NDP.

Much loved and respected by both former students and fellow teachers, Rice had a big impact on all he came in contact with. In a recent issue of Notre Dame's alumni magazine, "IRISH," Alexis (Burns) Bonucchi, O.D., a 1997 graduate of ND Prep, said "I loved Mr. Rice. He had such a good way of relating to us as teenagers. He never made you feel stupid."

Nineteen seventy-five NDHS graduate Michael Paletta, M.D., said in another issue of IRISH that he thought Rice made him a better scholar, more thorough researcher, better writer and a "more critical thinker." Full Story

ND faculty and staff celebrate retirements and "Teacher of the Year"

At the 2013 end-of-year faculty and staff party, NDPMA bid farewell and congratulations to two beloved, long-time faculty and staff members retiring: vice principal Donna Kotzan and religion department faculty member Kathy Chinavare.
Also at the party, current middle-division teacher and former alumni director, Kelly (Cole) Patterson '99 (NDP), was named "Teacher of the Year" for the middle division. Donna Kotzan received the same award for the upper division.

Along with all current faculty and staff members, many retired ND faculty and staff members came to join the celebration, including Dolores (Connors) Elbode, Roy Johnson, Norm Kotarski, Marie Place, Anthony Borton, Ken Parent, Hal Rice, Kirby Smith, Carol Belkowski, John Grossman, Deacon Anthony Morici, Betty Morici and Deacon W. Kessler.

NDP alum players coach Marist Academy lacrosse team

Brandon Beauregard and Joe Gifford, both 2011 graduates of Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy, together coached a team of middle-schoolers at the Cranbrook Lax Jam lacrosse tournament on June 2, 2013.  The team included ten Notre Dame Marist Academy students along with players from other local schools and lacrosse teams.

Beauregard and Gifford, who were lacrosse teammates at Notre Dame Prep, now attend University of Detroit Mercy where they are teammates on UDM's Division 1 lacrosse team - recently named MAAC 2013 Mens Lacrosse Champions! It was a great experience for Notre Dame Marist Academy students to be coached by alumni players.

Alum comedian Dave Coulier returns to MI for summer  shows

Comedian and actor Dave Coulier, who graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1977, will return to his home state for live comedy shows in late July and August.

The St. Clair Shores native is bringing his family-friendly stand-up comedy show to the historic Frauenthal Theater in Muskegon on Wednesday, July 31, and to the Temple Theatre in Saginaw on Saturday, August 3.

Coulier has been a regular face on television, first starring as Joey Gladstone in the ABC-TV sitcom "Full House" from 1987 to 1995. He also had a stint hosting "America's Funniest People." In between, he's acted in movies and continues a successful standup comedy routine at colleges and clubs around the country.

ND alum to moderate Q&A with cast of new cable drama

Notre Dame High School alum Mark Binelli '88 will be moderating a question-and-answer session in Ann Arbor later this month with the producer and cast members of the filmed-and set-in-Detroit cable drama "Low Winter Sun," which premieres in August on AMC.

Binelli is author of "Detroit City is the Place to Be," his second book, published last year. He was featured in the spring 2013 edition of IRISH magazine.

The Q&A will follow an advanced screening of the premiere episode, which will be held at 8 p.m., July 29, at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. The screening and Q&A will be simulcast to more than 20 other theaters across the country.

"Low Winter Sun" executive producer Chris Mundy and cast members Mark Strong ("Zero Dark Thirty," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") and Lennie James ("The Walking Dead") will be on hand to answer questions from Binelli and audience members. There is no charge for the event, but donations will be accepted for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

Marist on a mission
Fr. John Bolduc, s.m. is a missionary around the world
Father John Bolduc, s.m., who taught at Notre Dame High School in the '60s and '70s, has been serving for 40 years as a missionary around the world in countries ranging from Jamaica to Senegal. Currently stationed at Marist School in Atlanta, Bolduc looks back fondly on his tenure at NDHS. "I have wonderful memories of my years at Notre Dame in Harper Woods," he said.

When Marist provincial Fr. Ted Keating, s.m., asked Bolduc to write about his missionary work, he was still recovering from major heart surgery. "But I did so right away after he asked me-I think I was still under medication from heart surgery. I guess that means it was coming from the heart!"

Along with helping out at Marist School, Bolduc, now 70, spends a lot of time working with the Latino community at his parish in Atlanta.

Upper division students test language skills in Europe

Five Notre Dame Preparatory School students put their language skills to the test last month when they traveled to Spain and France for a week-long visit. Twelfth-graders Guilford Guthrie, Anthony Manganiello, Kayla Piskoroski and Lauren Sadowski, and 11th-grader Alison Lyiynen began their tour (with NDP modern language chair Kim (Rose) Anderson and parent Jennifer Beaudoin) in the vibrant city of Madrid where they were able to visit the palace of the royal family, the historical Museo del Prado, which is the main Spanish national art museum, and the modern Reina Sofia museum.

Other stops throughout the week included a culinary school in Madrid, the famous Chocolateria San Gines in Barcelona, the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, and a traditional outdoor concert series in France's beautiful Provence region. Students from Notre Dame have been traveling with the modern language department since 1998.

NDP students achieve 100% International Baccalaureate success

Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy announced this month that 100% of its upper-division students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate curriculum have successfully received an IB Diploma, a first for the school and well above the worldwide average of 78%. The U.S. average is 70%.

Twenty eight students at Notre Dame Prep were in the IB Diploma Programme at the beginning of the school year and all 28 successfully passed the International Baccalaureate final examinations taken in May 2013. This year, more than 120,000 students from over 130 countries participated in the examination session, which is known for its extremely high academic rigor. The marks are internationally moderated so that the same standards apply throughout the world.

"One-hundred percent is a great reward for all the hard work of our students and staff," said Notre Dame head of school Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m. '65 (NDHS). "It also provides a benchmark for us going forward."

Notre Dame senior promoting healthy snacks across country

Michael Wayne, who is heading into his final year at Notre Dame, has started his own business that he hopes will encourage people in Oakland County to make better and healthier choices when it comes to vending machines.

He decided to start this business when he forgot to bring a snack to school and realized it was nearly impossible to find any healthy food inside a vending machine.
