Dear  ,

It's great to be back at Notre Dame after a cherished three months at home with my newborn son, James. Returning to the alumni office feels like coming home to my other family. I've missed talking and meeting with our wonderful alumni each day! Karen Guest and the Alumni Association Board of Directors did a fantastic job handling alumni relations in my absence.
We're getting into the swing of spring - it's almost here! The alumni association is pleased to present a fun-filled event schedule, and we are finalizing another great issue of IRISH magazine. Meanwhile, our school and students continue to thrive, and everyone is looking forward to breaking ground on our new lower division campus in Pontiac next month.

Irish blessings,
Rachel (Alexander) Miller '00 (NDP)

Director of Alumni Relations

Battle of NDHS alum coaches ends with Irish win!
Andy Dold '98 and Whitney Robinson '98 (NDHS)

On January 18 the Notre Dame Prep men's basketball team defeated Dearborn Divine Child, 48-41. The game featured the first-time matchup between Whitney Robinson, in his first year as Notre Dame Prep's head varsity men's basketball coach, and Andy Dold, head coach at Dearborn Divine Child. The two 1998 Harper Woods Notre Dame graduates, who also played basketball together at NDHS, continue to be good friends (off the court).

"Before the game, we were laughing and joking. We're buddies. Andy is one of my best friends. Then we realized it was two minutes before tip off," Robinson remembered. "I told him I wanted him to do well, but not too well. It was surreal, but fun." (Source: Full Story

ND Grad and Workshop Owner Making Basketball Stars

Dave Guinane '72 (NDHS) has always been
intrigued with finding the best way to do everything on a basketball court. But the president and owner of The Basketball Workshop, which operates out of the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse in Shelby Township, is now helping others find the best way to do everything on the basketball court.

Recognized as one of the premier basketball shooting coaches in the nation, Guinane, a former Wayne State University varsity player, has worked with thousands of high school and college players over the years to help them become better all-around players and gain confidence in their skills. As a result, numerous "graduates" of his workshop have gone on to play college basketball and professional basketball, including alumna Bobbie (Bieszki) Hall '00 (NDP).
NDP alums and students well-represented in newest Eagle Scouts
Five NDP seniors and alumni earned Eagle Scout status over the past few months. Joseph Lombardo '12 (NDP) and Peter Dondanville '12 (NDP), and NDP seniors Erik Egner and Connor Verheyen were four of twelve Eagle Scouts named from Boy Scout Troop 185, co-chartered by Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Waterford and The Oakland County Sportsmen's Club in Clarkston. Dondanville's older brothers Matthew Dondanville '09 (NDP) and Chris Dondanville '06 (NDP) already are Eagle Scouts and had the honor of giving Peter his Eagle Scout charge in October 2012.

NDP senior Ryan Dau also recently earned Eagle Scout status as part of another troop. Dau wrote about his journey to becoming an Eagle Scout - read full article. It is estimated that only 2% of boys who join the Boy Scouts ever reach the rank of Eagle Scout.

On January 24, a large contingent of Notre Dame Prep students and chaperones took a red-eye bus trip to Washington, D.C., for the 2013 March for Life. Upon arrival in D.C., the group joined 40,000 other students for youth rallies, concerts and a Mass for Life concelebrated by hundreds of priests and bishops.

"Seeing thousands of young pro-life advocates peacefully uniting against abortion is incredible," said NDP senior Lauren Kaye. Full Story

Three NDP musicians make all-district

Notre Dame Prep seniors Jake Mathews, Rebekah Bierema and Maria Pangori made all-district as the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association hosted the District 4 All-District Honors Band and Jazz Band Festival on January 12 at the Clarkston Performing Arts Center.

The All District Honors Band is comprised of students from 16 different high schools in the Oakland County area and according to NDPMA band director Joe Martin, it is "the best of the best." The Notre Dame students performed at the Clarkston center under the direction of Mary Schneider from Eastern Michigan University and Ellen Rowe from the University of Michigan. "It was an outstanding concert and it makes me proud that we have such talented students," Martin said.

Notre Dame Marist Academy,  lower division update

Plans continue to move forward with the relocation of the lower division from Waterford to Pontiac. The final site plan was submitted to the city of Pontiac in January and is expected to be approved at a meeting in early February.

Groundbreaking on the permanent 12,000-square-foot building is expected to be in March. Work on the exterior of the existing 5,000-square-foot church building and 750-square-foot connector, which is being converted into administrative offices, a media center and multi-purpose gathering/gym area is expected to begin in March as well. Interior work on the church building has already begun.

The new building is targeted for completion by mid-August to coincide with the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.

150 years of Marists celebrated

In the Lent 2013 edition of "Today's Marists," a publication produced and distributed by The Society of Mary, U.S. Province, 150 years of Marist history in the United States is examined and celebrated. Read about how the Marists first visited the U.S. during the Civil War, established a presence in Louisiana and then expanded westward and toward the upper Midwest and New England.
