Anna Mott  '07 (NDP)-Peace Corps volunteer!
Anna is providing English instruction to students of Costa Rica.

Anna Mott is one busy person! And if you need English instruction, she is the one to contact!  Since May of this year, she has been in Costa Rica with the Peace Corps working with two Costa Rican English teachers to improve their levels of English and their teaching techniques.  She also organizes activities and English camps for the children in her town.

In Costa Rica, learning English can change a person's life, opening a door to new opportunities for work or study, a higher salary and a brighter future.  Many students at small elementary schools, however, do not receive adequate English instruction.

In January, Anna will be running a camp called JumpStart Costa Rica for 20 students in her town.

JumpStart Costa Rica, funded entirely through donations, offers intensive instruction to incoming seventh-graders. In addition to providing students the support they need to enter high school English classes for the first time, JumpStart seeks to boost confidence and teach life skills.

JumpStart is funded strictly through donations.  Anna mentioned that her community has expressed more interest in JumpStart than the program is presently able to accommodate.  The students and their parents are very grateful to be able to participate in this program.

If you would like to see the full story or make a donation to JumpStart, click here for the details.

With 250 retail business plans submitted, Elias '88 (NDHS) and Naomi Khalil were thrilled to hear their restaurant, La Feria, was chosen as the winner of $50,000. They won the 2012 Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest. Hatch Detroit is a non-profit organization that helps support retail businesses in Detroit.

The Khalils, along with their head chef Pilar Baron Hidalgo, plan on opening La Feria in 2013.  La Feria will be a Spanish restaurant located on Cass Avenue in Detroit's Cass Corridor. The Khalils want to introduce Detroiters to authentic Spanish dining!

Thanks again, Matt, for thinking of your alma mater! We have put the equipment to great use!

Notre Dame Prep  recognized for Excellence in Academics

In October, Notre Dame Prep received special recognition from The Cardinal Newman Society, which administers the Catholic High School Honor Roll.  NDP earned the recognition for "Excellence in Academics and Civic Education" and shared the award with only one other school in the United States. We, as the Notre Dame community, should all be very proud!  It's the hard work of all the teachers, staff and students that got us this recognition. Keep up the great work!

Notre Dame Annual Fund kicks off

It's a new school year and with it comes a new annual fund campaign. In early October, you should have received a letter in the mail describing the Notre Dame Annual Fund and asking for your support. Later in the year, you may receive a phone call or an e-mail asking for a gift.

We thank former NDHS faculty members Fr. Robert Champagne, s.m., Hal Rice and Ken Parent, and NDP student Francesco Munaco '13, for lending their names to our NDHS and NDP alumni solicitations this year.

Each year we see increased alumni support and we hope this year is no exception. The 2011-12 annual fund saw a 25% increase in alumni donors and a 30% increase in alumni dollars over 2010-11. Please prayerfully consider a gift to the 2012-13 Notre Dame Annual Fund. If you've contributed in the past, consider matching or increasing your most recent gift. If you've not yet supported the annual fund, consider making your first gift to Notre Dame.

If you have any questions about the Notre Dame Annual Fund, please contact Annual Fund Director Frank Castronova '89 (NDHS) at 248-373-2171 x 5 or fcastronova@ndpma.org.
