September Membership Luncheon
Guest Speaker: Secretary Don Skelton, FDOT District 7 Vice-Chair
 Join us at our September luncheon as Mr. Skelton shares plans for several major highway construction projects affecting Westshore. Reconstruction of I-275 from Westshore to downtown Tampa and widening of the Veteran's Expressway begin later this year! Mr. Skelton, is a 16-year veteran of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). In 2005, he was appointed FDOT District Secretary for District Seven, serving Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties. He has worked on a variety of projects during his tenure with FDOT, including planning and development of the Suncoast Parkway and the Tampa Interstate Study.

Westshore Master Plan Update
Work is progressing rapidly on the Westshore Master Plan. The plan will be complete early next year and will identify specific improvements to streets, sidewalks, parks, etc. that will foster new private-sector investment and create opportunities for economic development throughout Westshore. We will be holding a charette to provide detailed feedback regarding the initial design concepts on Tuesday, October 9 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida Conference Center, 4610 Eisenhower Blvd. Tampa, 33634. HART to host MetroRapid Open House
On Wednesday, September 12, the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) will hold an Open House for the MetroRapid East-West Bus Corridor Project Study. Information will be available on potential station locations, travel-time saving features, and elements that can improve transit service for this corridor. The event is scheduled from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Netpark Café Meeting Room, 5701 E. Hillsborough Ave., Tampa, FL 33610.

Free Transit Financing Workshop
The Westshore Alliance has partnered with several local agencies and governmental organizations from Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties to host Thinking Outside the Farebox: Creative Approaches to Financing Transit Projects. The event will be held on September 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The keynote speaker is U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation John Porcari. This is a FREE event, but registration is required. Westshore Development & Real Estate News

Construction has begun on Legacy Westshore, a 6 story 300 unit apartment building on Spruce Street between Hesperides & Trask (site is immediately north of the Jefferson High School athletic fields). This is the start of a new wave of residential developments breaking ground in Westshore to meet the demand for additional housing in Westshore.
At the August 23 City Council evening meeting, Atlanta based Perennial Properties received preliminary zoning approval for a 5 story, 255 unit apartment complex at 4310 W. Spruce Street. The 2nd public hearing for the project will be held on September 6 at 9:30 a.m.
The developers of Varela Westshore, will appear before Tampa City Council on November 8 to request slight modifications to a previously approved plan for a 350 unit apartment development at the southeast corner of Spruce and Lois. Targeted start date for construction is January 2013, with the first units available for occupancy in January 2014.
Kuhn Automotive Group recently purchased the site of the former Days Inn and Green Iguana at 2520/2522 N. Dale Mabry. A rezoning hearing before Tampa City Council for the property is scheduled on September 13.

 Tampa Bay Lightning Preseason Game Tickets
Tickets for the Tampa Bay Lightning's two preseason games at the Tampa Bay Times Forum are now on sale. The games will be played Wednesday, September 26 against St. Louis Blues and Thursday, October 4 versus Florida Panthers.
