MAY 2016

MAY is here! This month, we are highlighting concussions and vestibular rehabilitation. A concussion can happen at anytime to anyone, so it is a good idea to understand what a concussion is and how it can be treated once it occurs.
PT GUIDE TO CONCUSSION

Concussion is a traumatic brain injury that can damage brain tissue and change the chemical balance of the brain. Concussion may cause physical, mental, and emotional symptoms and problems, both short-term and long-term. Every concussion is considered a serious injury by health care providers.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 2.5 million concussions occurred in the United States in 2010, the most recent year for which the CDC has statistics. A physical therapist can assess symptoms to determine if a concussion is present, and treat the injury by guiding the patient through a safe and individualized recovery program.

VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION

Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based program, designed by a specialized physical therapist, to improve balance and reduce dizziness-related problems.

At your appointment, a physical therapist will evaluate your symptoms and review your medical history. Your PT will identify any problems with your balance, your gait (how you walk), neck motion, visual stability, as well as examine other potential problem areas. Based on the findings, a plan of care is developed. The goal of your treatment plan is to improve any deficits that were identified and improve your ability to function in activities of everyday living, reduce your risk for falling, and ultimately, improve your quality of life.

PHIONA HEADS IT HARD
Phiona is a 15-year-old female star soccer player. After today's game, she admits to her parents that she is feeling a bit dizzy after "heading" the ball a number of times. She says a little dizziness is "common" for her, but now she has a headache and the bright headlights of oncoming cars are hurting her eyes. Phiona has trouble concentrating at home as she tries to do her homework. She also has trouble falling asleep. Her dizziness gets worse when she changes her head position. Her parents worry that she may have a concussion, and check on her throughout the night. They call their physical therapist the next morning, and take her to see him right away.

CLINIC NEWS
BEVERLY PARROTT PROVIDES PHYSICAL THERAPY IN IDAHO
On a vacation road trip two weeks ago to Western Colorado, Utah, and Idaho I was invited to work with the head trainer, Jodi, at Idaho State University at Poccatello, Idaho. We saw five football players and one basketball player on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning before the football ball game. Their injuries included concussion, shin splints, shoulder separation, hip and low back injuries, and status post bilateral knee surgeries for the basketball player. Diagnosis and treatment was given for these young athletes and suggestions given to the athletes and Jodi on continuing manual care and exercises. I observed the taping of pre-game wrists for football by Jodi and taping of the ankles for the female soccer players. I also observed the subjective questioning and examination by the trainers for concussion injuries. I felt very privileged to have the opportunity to work alongside Jodi and to work with these young, enthusiastic athletes.
