kleinIIE Europe Award for Excellence in International Education 2013

  

It gives us great pleasure to announce the recipient of this year's Award for Excellence in International Education: G�bor Boj�r.

 

Through this award, we would like to recognize Mr. Boj�r's visionary leadership in fostering US study abroad and promoting Europe as a study abroad destination for North American students by establishing the Aquincum Institute of Technology (AIT), as well as strong support for

IIE Europe-administered leadership development programs, namely the GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders Program in Central and Eastern Europe and the Flinn Foundation Central Europe Summer Seminar.  Mr. Boj�r has championed a truly remarkable international education initiative and has personally impacted the career development of generations of talented young Europeans and Americans.

 

The IIE Europe Award for Excellence is an award initiative that was launched by the IIE Europe team in 2011 to recognize outstanding achievement in international education.  The criteria for recipients include meaningful contributions to IIE's mission of Opening Minds to the World�, relevance to European higher education, and high impact on the European education community.   Past award recipients include Eszter Szab�, Regional Leader, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, General Electric - Central and Eastern Europe (2011) and Anthony C. Gooch, Founder and Benefactor of the Klein Family Scholarships (2012).

International Education Week kicks off today. First held in 2000, International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education.

  

IEW is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This annual initiative aims to promote international understanding and build support for international educational exchange by encouraging the development of programs that prepare Americans to live and work in a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States." opendoorsOpen Doors 2013

  

IIE is pleased to announce the release of the Open Doors 2013 student mobility data.

 

This year's report finds that the number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by 7.2% to a record high of 819,644 in the 2012/13 academic year, while U.S. students studying abroad increased by 3.4 % over the previous year.

Open Doors, supported by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, is a comprehensive information resource on international students and scholars studying or teaching at higher education institutions in the United States, and U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit at their home colleges or universities.

 

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education will host a press briefing in Washington, DC on Tuesday, November 12th to present data from the 2013 Open Doors Report. Opening speakers include Evan M. Ryan, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs and Allan Goodman, President and CEO, Institute of International Education.

European Students in the U.S.

  

Five of the top 25 countries sending students to the U.S. are in Europe: Turkey, Germany, the United KingdomFrance, and Spain.

  

Some of the biggest mobility shifts over the previous year among European countries sending students to U.S. colleges and universities could be seen in Slovenia (+32.7%), Czech Republic (+10.7), Denmark (+10.2%), and Sweden (+9.1%).

 

 

The majority of (73.3%) European students in the U.S. are pursuing full degrees (undergraduate or graduate). Since 2011/12 the number of international students at the undergraduate level, as well as those in non-degree programs and Optional Practical Training (OPT) has continued to climb for Europe overall.

Europe continues to be the top destination for U.S. study abroad, hosting over half of all U.S. students studying abroad in 2011/12.

 

Four of the five top destinations for U.S. students are in Europe and are all EU member states: the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and France.

 

Other European destinations in the top 25 (globally) include: Germany (6), Ireland (9), Czech Republic (17), Denmark (21), Greece (22), and Austria (25).

For the sixth year in a row, EducationUSA hosted the U.S. Pavilion at the European Association for International Education (EAIE) Conference in Istanbul, Turkey from September 10th-13th, 2013.

 

EAIE saw more than 4,800 higher education professionals from over 90 countries this year. The U.S. Pavilion featured 19 accredited U.S. higher education institutions. The 26th Annual EAIE Conference will take place in Prague from September 16th-19th, 2014.
