I'm definitely experiencing classroom shock-a shifting of my pedagogical mindset-as I settle into my new job as a 5th grade teacher at a Finnish public school.

 

My family and I plan on living in Finland permanently, but I can't help but think about what I'd do differently if I returned to an American classroom. Talk about reverse-classroom shock! I've already identified three big shifts I'd make right away.

Sustaining comprehensive school health: keeping schools motivated

Comprehensive School Health (CSH) is a whole school approach that supports students' health and educational success. Many schools in Alberta use this approach to create healthy learners and healthy school environments. CSH is meant to be an ongoing process, rather than a time-limited project. It is important that schools and school districts build the capacity to maintain this approach on a long-term basis to sustain improvements in school health.

Get creative with holiday snacks

 

Special event days such as class parties, dances and track and field event are a fun way to gather together and celebrate. They are also a great time to have healthy and tasty food choices for students, teachers, families, or the whole community! As parents, often you are asked to provide food for celebrations.
