Curriculum-Based Lesson Plans to Support Healthy School Communities
Submission from Alberta Health Services Health Promotion Coordinators
The Comprehensive School Health (CSH) approach is widely used within Alberta to improve student health and educational success. This approach recognizes four distinct pillars that provide a strong foundation for creating healthy school communities. These pillars include:
- Social and Physical Environment;
- Teaching and Learning;
- Healthy School Policy; and,
- Partnerships and Services.
Teachers play a particularly direct and active role within the Teaching and Learning pillar of CSH. Teaching and Learning includes the resources, activities, and curriculum that help students build the skills they need to improve their health and well-being. Curriculum-based lesson plans and related resources are available from Alberta Health Services that contribute to Alberta Education's Health and Life Skills curriculum outcomes, as well as other subjects including language arts, art, math, science, social studies physical education,career and technology studies, leadership, career and life management and drama.
