100% Participation!

We are excited to share that 100% of our faculty and staff donated to our Annual Giving this year! We raised just over $13,000 which will directly improve the experience for our talented students by allowing us to provide scholarship opportunities. Six students were awarded the Tradition of Excellence Faculty scholarship in the amount of $1,000 for the 2016-17 school year.

Parents: we hope you will also consider participating in our Annual Giving. Watch for information about our Parent Challenge kicking off on May 9! Thank you in advance to our Parent Challenge Chairs for their planning: Class of 2016: Frank Agin, Class of 2017: Phil Kraker, Class of 2018: Charles Rowan, and Class of 2019: Joe Zaremba.
E-Cycle Program

The Environmental Club sponsored an e-Cycle campaign for Earth Week, for some electronic spring cleaning. Students donated their old mobile devices which will be 100% repurposed or recycled by e-Cycle. Our raffle winners were Melissa McCabe and Amy Feltz.

With electronic waste representing a growing majority of the toxins in our landfills, it is imperative that we properly recycle obsolete cell phones, batteries, chargers and other accessories. e-Cycle has a strict zero landfill policy for all commercial materials.

We will continue to collect your old mobile devices which will be 100% repurposed or recycled by e-Cycle. Any used, broken, or cracked mobile device -- phones, iPads, Kindles, tablets -- are acceptable. A collection bin will be in Room 212 until the end of the school year.

Celebration of Life

All are welcome to honor and celebrate the life of Roseann Costello, beloved Mother, Grandmother, and friend on Sunday, May 15th at the beautiful Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio.

Please join Roseann's children, Kristen and Donn, in The Palm House at Franklin Park Conservatory for a lightly catered Open House reception 11am-3pm to enjoy the plants, music, and fellowship, and to remember our beautiful Roseann.

A special ceremony will be held at 1pm to honor Roseann with photographs, special memories, music, and of course, prayer. We hope all can be in attendance for this special moment.

Spring will be in full bloom, and the flowers and butterfly exhibit will be showcased to remind us the renewal of life. We invite you to enjoy the day and stroll through the grounds meditating/praying for Roseann's memory, and the memory of all loved ones who have passed.

As a special request, we ask that you wear lightly colored clothing to symbolize the renewing light of God, and to bring a positive affirming energy to the space in order to best uplift and support the family.

We look forward to sharing this special time with each of you whom have made such a positive impact on our family; your loving actions will last a lifetime. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Please look for special signs posted at FPC alerting you of the parking available for the event.

We will also join together as a community of faith this Saturday, April 30 at 5:00 p.m. in the St. Francis DeSales Chapel. A reception will be held in the Franciscan Center immediately following mass with light refreshments.
Casino Royale Wrap-Up

Thank you to all who attended "March Madness" Casio Royale. The SFDHS gymnasium was transformed into an elegant ambiance with a twist of "March Madness" flare. Over 300 parents, alumni, past parents, faculty, and supporters enjoyed a wonderful night of delicious food and spirits, fun casino gaming including the new game of Pop-A-Shot, and over 200 silent and live auction bidding. We are pleased to report that we raised $66,000 (net) for the co-curricular programs including athletics, band, drama, and over 30 scholastic and interest-based clubs. This year we asked the students to help sell Casino Raffle tickets prior to the event and raised $11,000.  The winners of the Casino Raffle were the following DeSales parents: $1,000 Rhonda and Brian Dyko, $500 Teresa and Brent Kauser, and $250 Deanne and Timothy Limbert!  Click here to check out all the incredible items that were up for bid and the proceeds it made for the programs.

We appreciate the collective efforts of the entire St. Francis DeSales High School community for their donations, purchases, attendance and support for this year's auction.  Special thanks to Auction Chair Terri Flora and her Casino Royale committee volunteers; Sue Mulligan, Tina Cook, Arius Cook, Peg Higgins, Karyn Koller, Jen Riedmaier, Renee Ghiloni, Kelly Baldwin, Erin Husslein and Terise Ryan for creating such a remarkable and festive evening.

Picture Perfect

Photography teacher Mrs. Belt shares a few photography tips with students and parents to help you take great Prom and Graduation pictures.

Outdoors: Overcast lighting is actually better because the light is even and diffused. In bright sun, in the middle of the day, the sun acts like a giant spotlight and creates harsh, unflattering shadows. So take your photos in the shade if it is a sunny day.

Indoors: Side lighting is best, so place your subject near a window or doorway using natural light. Set your ISO to 800. I recommend shooting in the "P" mode, which is an automatic mode to insure an accurate exposure.

Portraits: The ideal time to take portraits outside is late afternoon when the sun is low in the sky because you get warm side lighting which is flattering.

Close up, 3/4 length, and full length: Be aware of the background and adjust accordingly. Simple backgrounds work best because the focus should be the people. If you can't avoid a distracting background, then set your aperture (ex. F4) to its maximum to blur the background. The more variety of photos you take, the better, so encourage your subjects to change position often because everyone has a better side.

Never shoot from below. It's better to shoot slightly above your subject and use your zoom! This will minimize distortion and will look more flattering.
Daily Reflection

One of the virtues which Our Lord displayed for us on the cross was holy perseverance. Without this virtue we cannot merit the fruit of His passion and death. It is little use beginning well if we do not persevere until the end. In fact, it is certain that we will remain for all eternity in the state we find ourselves at the end of our days, when God will cut off the thread of our lives. (Sermons 29; O. IV, p. 283)
