Students (and staff!) in the Spotlight

Congratulations to senior Lauren Myers who had her painting selected for the 2016 State Exhibition! Pictured is a photo of her painting "Ohio."

At the recent Ohio Music Education Association Conference, the SFD Women's Ensemble (Alexis Ankrom, Caitlyn Clarke, Katy Spittell, Sophie Stiltner, Brenna Bookless, Sophie Oulette-Wade, McKenna Schwartz, Alyssa Gabriel and Julia Murray) received a "1" which is the highest rating! We had two soloists, Caitlyn Clarke and Claire Draminski, as well. Caitlyn received a "1", the highest rating, and Claire received a "2" a superior rating.

Our World Languages teachers had the opportunity to attend the Ohio Foreign Language Conference in conjunction with the Central States Conference last week. They went to many useful sessions and enjoyed spending time together as a department.

Yesterday, the SFDHS Writing Club welcomed retired teacher and English Department Chair Mr. Bill Kerwin to read the opening chapter from his soon-to-be-published novel, Big Sleep City Boogie to students and faculty in the Franciscan Center. No spoiler alerts here -- we will let you read and judge the book for yourself!  Since his retirement, Kerwin has kept busy writing, traveling, and singing with his blues band.

Last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, all members of the junior class (split among the three days) went on the annual Urban Plunge retreat. Students went to various service agencies around the Diocese, volunteering their time and efforts to act as disciples of Christ. They walked away with a greater appreciation for their many blessings, and a better understanding of the needs in our surrounding community. Pictured are students helping out at St. Lawrence Haven.

After our special Grandparents Day breakfast last Friday, we were blessed to have Bishop Campbell celebrate mass with our school community, and join a group of our student service leaders for a luncheon. We had several of our feeder school principals and students with us for mass and lunch as well.

Dining 101

The Business Club invites you to our grand finale module, Dining 101, which will take place at Brio Tuscan Grille at Polaris on Wednesday, April 27th from 4:30 PM-6:00 PM

Did you know that colleges and employers often evaluate a candidate's table manners and dining etiquette as part of the interview and selection process? Universities and employers are looking for complete candidates who can represent them well during and after business hours. Would you pass this test? Enjoy a great 4-course meal with friends while learning critical dining skills and etiquette that will help you be a business success while dining! This exciting event will teach you many skills, including: body language at the table, proper table etiquette, foods to avoid, the do's and don'ts of dining, excusing oneself from the table, the toast- when, how, and to whom, paying the bill, along with other dining etiquette skills.

The all-inclusive 4 course meal cost is $20.00 (tax/tip included). Field trip permission slips MUST be turned in to Mr. Montenaro, along with payment. Payment and permission slips are not needed until April 20th, but will be accepted sooner. Permission Slips can be obtained directly from Mr. Montenaro. There is a tremendous amount of advance planning and coordination for this event, including a room reservation at Brio, thus we MUST have your RSVPs on or before April 6th. Keep in mind that the private room has a maximum occupation so this event will be first come, first served. Don't delay and risk missing this great event. Once again, all gentlemen are encouraged to wear a sport jacket or blazer to this event. Please direct any questions to a Business Club Officer or Mr. Montenaro. We look forward to you joining us for the last module of the Emerging Leaders' Business Etiquette classes!
Trip to France this Summer

St. Francis DeSales will again be offering students the opportunity to travel to Le Havre, Normandy, France this summer as a part of an exchange program with Bishop Watterson. Students will stay in the home of a French student and his/her family for two weeks and during that stay students will visit various locations in Normandy, France and experience the school and home life of teens in France. Below is an informational flier which contains further details relating to cost and other specifics. Please contact Mrs. Heather Evans at  [email protected] this week with any questions or if you are interested in this amazing opportunity.

Daily Reflection

We should approach holy prayer purely and simply to do our duty and give witness to our fidelity. If it pleases His Divine Majesty to speak to us and aid us by His holy inspirations and interior consolations, it is certainly a great honor and the sweetest of delights. But if it does not please God to give us this grace, ignoring us as if He did no see us or as if we were not in His presence, we must not leave on that account but remain there devotedly and peacefully. The Lord will infallibly be pleased with our patience and note our diligence and perseverance, so that when we come before Him again He will favor us with His consolations and enable us to taste the delights of deep prayer.
