Students in the Spotlight

St. Francis DeSales High School is proud to announce that seniors Julia Murray and Brittany Truong have both been recognized by the National Merit Corporation as a Finalist.  They are two of 15,000 finalists who are eligible for scholarship awards.

Alexandra Weikert has been chosen as one of 12 young ladies in central Ohio to receive the Zonta Club of Columbus Outstanding Young Women of 2016 Award. Alexandra will be honored at a luncheon and will have an opportunity to win a $1000 scholarship.

Our SFDHS International students held a Chinese Lantern Festival party last weekend as a way share some of the traditions from home.  Guests enjoyed Chinese treats, played games and listened to music.

Sophomore Dominic Polemeni-McGovern recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. His project took place last October as he built a fence for St. Thomas the Apostle church with the help of Troop 310 (out of St. Matthias). Dominic has been in the scouting program for 9 years, starting with the Cub Scout Troop 314 (out
of Saint James).

Senior Ben Plzak recently took part in  a
mission trip to Nicaragua, which as he explains, "was one to remember! The 28 members of the group from Church of the Messiah in Westerville, Ohio and other churches traveled to Managua and the surrounding outskirts as well as Ometepe Island. While on the mission trip we were involved in many service projects, including horse therapy and swimming with physically and mentally handicapped children in Tesoros de Dios (treasures of God), taking 75 orphans to swim in a lagoon, playing soccer with the children whose families in Project Chacocente have been relocated from living in the city dump, and donating pigs and chickens to the poverty stricken families for a chance to grow in wealth from the animals. Also, translating Spanish to my group became vital in connecting people to people in order to spread Gods love. Along the way, I would carry soccer balls in my backpack to hand out to the poor children and families all around the area. All in all, this experience allowed me to give hope and joy to families who need it most. As a result, I am grateful of the prayers, donation of the soccer balls, and opportunity to change the lives of so many as well as my own."

Although our mock trial teams performed well last Friday, we did not advance on to States. However, Vicky Randel was recognized as the Outstanding Attorney in her trial, and Drew Schwenk was named the Outstanding Witness in his trial.

Pictured below are members of the French Club who celebrated Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday!

Members of the St. Vincent DePaul service organization were commissioned on Sunday, February 21st in a mass and ceremony held at St. Paul Parish in Westerville.  Each member received a pin as a symbol of their commitment to the poor in the spirit of Blessed Frederick Ozanam.  Students, officers, and moderators were treated to a pizza lunch at the conclusion of the diocesan-wide ceremony.

Daily Reflection

When, O Lord, will patience with our neighbor take possession of our hearts? This is the final and most excellent lesson of the teaching of the saints; happy that spirit who fully understands this! We are always anxious that others put up with our miseries, and that they tolerate us; yet the miseries and faults of our neighbor always seem so great and unsupportable! (Letters 1243; O. XVII, p. 289)
