STALLIONS IN THE HEADLINES
Did you see the recent post on Facebook? Senators Bacon, Hughes, and Jordan visited the school on Monday to visit with student leaders and staff to discuss funding for Catholic schools. Check out the photo! How? If you have a Facebook account, search for St. Francis DeSales High School and become a fan of our page or follow the link here.  This is another great way to stay up-to-date with what is taking place at SFDHS.

Congratulations to senior Anthony Stranges (pictured left) for being named Atlas Butler's April Strength in Service Award winner. Anthony will be featured in an issue of THIS WEEK COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS. A representative from Atlas Butler will deliver a $250 check to the school and Anthony will receive a White Castle Crave Party Pack.

Junior Audrey Marzec and friends gathered on April 20 to celebrate her birthday at Columbus Square Bowling Lanes.   In place of gifts, her friends brought canned goods for WARM (Westerville Area Resource Ministry).   The girls collected 65 cans! Pictured below are: Rachel Lartey, Ha Nguyen, Jade Smith, Cam Nguyen, Alyssa Cira, Sam Thune, Audrey Marzec, Midori Marang, and Rachel Putnam.

Junior Maria Riley and freshman Emaly Pusecker were the SFD recipients of the Shamrock Club's Msgr. J. Colby Grimes Scholarship. Our finalist, Maria, will receive $1,200, with Emaly as the semi-finalist receiving $300 toward tuition assistance.

Congratulations to the 2013-14 St. Vincent DePaul Club Officers and Leadership Team: President Ha Nguyen, Vice President Zanie Fox, Secretary Maura McCabe, Treasurer Audrey Marzec, Public Relations Emma Bigalke, Bri Ellis, Annamaria Pagani, and Maria Riley, and Hospitality Eunice Agyapong, Ashley Cudnik, and Natalie Yoder. Pictured above.

Teacher and Engineering Club adviser Jim Savinell received the Excite Award for the MIT-Lemelson program InvenTeams. The InvenTeam initiative is designed to excite high school students about invention; empower students to problem solve; and encourage an inventive culture in schools and communities. Mr. Savinell will put together a team of 12-15 students to work on inventing an automatic page turner for disabled persons and musicians. He and his students will be applying for a grant due in September for up to $10,000 to invent the machine and unveil it at a Eureka festival next June at MIT.

Junior Patrick Nie (pictured right) will be joining Ben Dumm and Keagan Lipak at Boys State this summer at Bowling Green State University. This is a very prestigious nomination where the boys will interact with state and local government dignitaries and learn the inner workings of government as they participate in a mock government.

Congratulations to senior Alexis Swift for being a runner up in the Walsh University National Catholic Schools Week Photo Contest. Alexis will be awarded $250 from Walsh for her winning photo. There were over 130 submissions in which the photographer was to capture what Catholic education means to them.

The Digital Photography classes took a field trip to the zoo on Tuesday. Although they had a challenging assignment to fulfill while they were there, the weather was beautiful, great pictures were taken, and fun was had by all.

Ten students, two parents, Mrs. Miceli and Mr. Montenaro travled to Chicago on Thursday, April 25. They visited Chicago Board of Trade, Willis Towers, Money Museum, Wrigley Field, Magnificent Mile and of course, had deep dish pizza at Giordano's. Pictured below right.

A note of thanks...
Dear DeSales students, staff, and family members,
Thank you for all of your support of Tyler's fundraiser to benefit the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. With your help, we were able to raise $4,066 for the foundation! This money will help so many people suffering from these diseases by supporting research and resources for patients and families. We sincerely appreciate your prayers, words of encouragement, purchasing of wristbands and raffle tickets, and dining at Giammarco's Pizzeria! The support has been overwhelming to us and we want you to know how much we appreciate it! Thank you!
Sincerely,
Tim, Tania, Tyler and Kyle Moon

SPIRITUAL REFLECTION

Let us consider for a moment if lively faith in the cross of Mount Calvary is firmly rooted in our intellect. Faith was indeed implanted there in baptism, but has a sort of idol been fabricated there by our imagination? Let us see if in our memory, where hope has been planted, we have replaced it with an image of some beautiful goddess; if in our will, where God has planted charity, we have introduced vanity and the love of earthly things. In imitation of Saint Helena, we should uproot these cursed figures to reerect the cross, saying with the apostle, "May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." [Gal 6:14] (Sermons 18; O. IX, p. 179)
