LENTEN LETTER
Dear Friends:
I hope this issue of DeTales finds you and your family in good health and spirits.  The students, faculty, and staff of Saint Francis DeSales High School are doing very well. As is typically the case as the calendar approaches spring, there is a noticeable increase in everyone's energy level.  As we witness longer days and increased sunshine, I find that the pep and enthusiasm increases in a proportional manner.

While I find these signs to be very energizing, I am also blessed to witness first-hand the power of our faith community through the poignant and solemn liturgical season of Lent. It is very moving to see our community participate in meaningful and contemplative reflection; moreover, to see both the adults and students engage in prayer, penance, and fasting. Our Lenten journey has provided each of us with many opportunities to pray and reflect on how Christ's death on the cross and ultimate resurrection has graced us with the gift of ever-lasting life.

The inherent beauty of this Lenten season was magnified in recent days as the Catholic Church selected a new leader.  On March 13th the Conclave of Cardinals chose Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to become the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.  It seems very fitting that the selection of our new Pope, Francis I, would occur during this season that has come to be associated with rebirth.

As people of faith we should find great comfort in the fact that the leaders of the Catholic Church through the divine intercession of the Holy Spirit have thoughtfully and prayerfully selected the successor to Pope Benedict XVI.  It is our firm belief that Pope Francis I will be graced with God's abundant blessings to have the wisdom and strength to lead the Church with the compassion and care of his namesake Saint Francis of Assisi.

In closing, I wish to commend the entire Saint Francis DeSales High School community for the reverence, love, and respect that has been demonstrated toward our church during this beautiful and historic time; furthermore, I would ask that as a family of faith that we carry this positive energy with us as we move toward the closing of this school year.

Peace and God's Blessings,
Dan Garrick '79
Principal

LIKE TO SEW?
The SFD Performing Arts department is in need of sewing and costuming help for the upcoming production of Hello Dolly.  If you are able to spare 1-3 hours per week to help make the performance a success we would greatly appreciate your help.  You do not need to be an expect seamstress, just someone who has a sewing machine and can sew a straight stitch.  If you would like to help but do not sew, there are items that need to be cut out and other miscellaneous tasks that need done.  Middle school and high school students interested in costuming are also encouraged to help.  We are in need to ribbon, lace, silk flowers, etc. to decorate hats and hair pieces for the show. Please contact Temple VanCuyk at 614-932-0818 or [email protected]  if you can help.

BC Calculus students (pictured right) celebrated "Pi Day" yesterday (3/14) by calculating the volume of a pie by setting up a Calculus Disk formula versus using a Geometric formula for finding the Frustum of right circular cone and then compared.  Since the volume of one M&M is approximately 1 cc, they found their pie was equal approximately 741 M&M's!

SPIRITUAL REFLECTION

There is no need to get upset if we find that we are not on equally friendly terms with everyone, provided we love our neighbor cordially, with real affection, as the Lord has commanded us, preferring the other person always and in everything above ourselves, according to the order of holy charity, and never refusing to do anything we can for him or her. We must be prepared to do everything for our neighbor except damn ourselves! (Spiritual Treatises IV; O. VI, pp. 60-61)
