The Hank Williams movie that was filmed in Shreveport, "I Saw the Light", opens at The Robinson Film Center on Friday, April 1st. In conjunction with the opening weekend, a special Live Music tribute to Hank Williams will be presented on Friday, April 1 (Sold Out) and Sat., April 2. Performers will include Joe Osborn, Buddy Flett, Bruce Flett, Dan Garner and Matthew Davidson. Here are the details from The Robinson Film Center's press release:
SHREVEPORT - Robinson Film Center is celebrating Shreveport's music heritage with a live Hank Williams tribute to kick off the run of the Shreveport-filmed biopic "I Saw the Light" 6 p.m. April 1 (sold out) and April 2.
There will be a prescreening barbecue dinner prepared by Louisiana Food Prize winner Tootie Morrison. During dinner, some of Shreveport's finest musicians will sing their favorite Williams' songs and talk about his musical influence. Following dinner, everyone will head to the theater to see Tom Hiddleston as Williams in "I Saw the Light." The movie and live tribute are sponsored by Centenary Film Society.
In addition to hearing some of Williams' biggest hits, audience members will also hear from local historians about his rise to fame while living in Shreveport and performing on the Louisiana Hayride, and about the Bossier City girl who stole his heart.
Participants in the evening include local musicians Matthew Davidson, Buddy Flett, Dan Garner, and Joe Osborn; music historian Chris Brown; and local tour guide Johnny Wessler.
"It's not often we get to show a movie that was filmed in Shreveport, set in Shreveport and about one of Shreveport's most popular musicians," said RFC audience director Meghan Hochstetler. "Hank Williams' story is a big deal to our community, so we are making a big deal about this movie. We have the best of the best performing, and each of them has his own personal story to tell about what Hank's music means to them."
Buddy Flett grew up listening to Williams, and he's been a lasting influence on his life and career.
"Hanks songs have influenced a generation of songwriters," said Flett. "He found a good fit here in Shreveport - the Hayride was good for Hank, and Hank was good for the Hayride."
Brown will be the evening's emcee and said he's excited for community members to experience a bit of William's world.
"Audience members will learn about Williams' formative time spent living in Shreveport as well as discover how his music continues to inspire generations of local musicians," said Brown.
Tickets for the "I Saw the Light" Hank Williams Tribute are $30 ($28, RFC members). Tickets include dinner, movie and live performance. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. April 2 at Robinson Film Center, 617 Texas St. Visit www.robinsonfilmcenter.org or call 318.459.4122 for tickets.

Review:
"It's not just that the 16-year-old Matthew Davidson writes his own music, a considerably rare thing among blues prodigies. And it's not just that he deftly combines these rootsy leanings with towering pop hooks. It's not just his boyish good looks, either. It's all of that, as Davidson crafts a sophomore project that is as intriguing as it is offbeat. In the end, Cross My Heart is both a blues record that often moves far afield from the blues, and a pop record with real soul. And it works, principally because of the endless approachability that Davidson brings to things." ~Nick DeRiso, Something Else Reviews, May 14, 2014
