Christmas Eve - NWLA Veterans Home
Shadow Soldiers, a local non-profit organization started by Will Saddler, hosted a Christmas Eve party at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Bossier City. The volunteers with Shadow Soldiers brought soft drinks, snacks and a gift bag to each veteran. They gave awards to the oldest veteran (in his nineties) and the vet with the most years of service (more than 30). Matthew provided the entertainment, playing "older" tunes ranging from Elvis to Chuck Berry to The Everly Brothers. One "young" man even started dancing to "Rock n Roll Christmas"! Another veteran had his harmonicas with him, and played along with Matthew on a few songs. Since Matthew has had plenty of practice lately on "You Are My Sunshine", he ended his set with a sing-along of it, and you could tell that everyone knew Louisiana's song! It was a memorable Christmas Eve, and we give a big shout-out to the volunteers with Shadow Soldiers who organized such a special evening for these American heroes.

Meet 14-Year-Old Singer/Guitarist Matthew Davidson, Our Mac Wire "Pick to Click" by Anne M. Raso (New York, NY)

"We're very excited about 14-year-old guitarist/songwriter Matthew Davidson from the Shreveport, LA area. There are not many eighth graders with these kinds of chops--and his appearances in his neck of the woods led legendary Wrecking Crew bassist Joe Osborn (who also lives in the Shreveport area) to sit up and take notice enough to want to perform and promote the adorable young performer. It's nice to see young people not going the "pure pop" route. Did we fail to mention that he's been jamming since the tender age of seven? Now, that's incredible!

Matthew respects Justin Bieber, but he's not trying to be a teen idol--he wants to be known for his guitar licks and admirable songwriting skill. There are several great videos by Matthew on YouTube now including ones with Osborn on bass--just the guitar and bass together sound like a whole band. We wish the best for Matthew because we respect all the time he has put into honing his craft and we are happy that someone of Osborn's stature--who has played on records by everyone from the Monkees to Frank Sinatra and who discovered The Carpenters many years ago--is help taking him to the top. Osborn tells us, "What makes him different than other players his age is that he is like a seasoned veteran performer already. You can tell that he really loves what he is doing!"
About Matthew Davidson -

"Wonder kid Matthew Davidson may only be 14 but he definitely knows a little something about the blues. Step Up is only a taste of what is to come for Matthew. His mature funk'd out guitar skills are inevitably demonstrative of this kids natural talent and devotion to music. You'll never hear another 14-year-old hone that Louisiana Southern blues-funk rhythm the way that Davidson has. " ~Kimmie Tubre, Where Y'at Magazine, New Orleans, LA - December 2012

"The next generation of stars in Louisiana...Matthew Davidson...14 years old from Shreveport, Louisiana. He is going to be something special. He is right now and he's going to be in the future. You know, you look at Matthew and you think about Hunter Hayes, who Louisiana has watched grow up over the years...(3 Grammy nominations for him this year), so...the future of Louisiana music is in good hands." ~Louisiana Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, Louisiana Public Broadcasting - December 2012

"Matthew Davidson is blessed with a God-given, born-in-the-bone, talent. His musicianship is far beyond his age. When I play with Matthew, it's like playing with a musician with many years of experience. Always a perfect gentleman, Matthew's personality shines through in every performance. He obviously loves what he is doing!"      ~Joe Osborn, famed "Wrecking Crew" bassist who played on numerous hit records of the 60's - 70's with Glen Campbell, The Carpenters, The 5th Dimension, Simon and Garfunkel and many more

"Matthew Davidson is a hell of guitar player. The scrubbed, grinning Shreveport 14-year-old, Ferris Buhler-looker demonstrates on this impeccably produced demo an understanding of tone and pacing, a sense of when to hold back and then to set a song ablaze. Producer and bassist Joe Osborn (of the famed L.A. Wrecking Crew; that's him on the 5th Deminsions' "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" among countless hits) frames the phenom in pop and blues contexts on Step Up to show the versatility of his ward. By far, the best tune is the last eponymous track, the only song penned by the rising star. Davidson turns the engine over with some stuttering, rhythmic licks (I kept thinking this was going to be Falco's "Der Kommisar" which would have been an ambitious choice for a cover) but soon lays out a carefully-wrought landscape of bluesy, tight melodies, rushing in the tide and glowing off like a sunset the rare inspiring guitar instrumental. This boy can play."  Alex V. Cook (Click HERE for the complete review)
