An estimated 80 million customers have had their account information stolen in what is considered the largest health care breach to date. Anthem announced today it was the target of a sophisticated external cyber attack where hackers gained access to Anthem's computer system and obtained information about insureds, including names, birthdays, medical IDs, Social Security numbers, street addresses, e-mail addresses, employment information and income data.

The breach has created concern in the industry that if large, well-protected companies can be victim to a data breach, what does the news mean for small and mid-size companies. Verizon's most recent Data Breach Investigations Report indicates that small and mid-size businesses are the top targets for cybercriminals, suffering breaches more often than larger firms.
