Reducing Injuries Through Ergonomics

Do you . . .

  • Use your arms and hands all day at work?
  • Work for long periods of time with your hands at or above shoulder height?
  • Work in awkward positions?
  • Lift or carry materials?
  • Climb ladders or scaffolds?

If you're like most sheet metal workers, you answered "yes" to one or more questions. If so, the way you work may be harming your muscles, joints or tendons. If we are aware of the risks we face, we can begin to change the way we perform our work to prevent bodily damage.

These problems may be a result of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs). Certain work activities we do every day can cause tiny injuries (traumas) to our shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, fingers, knees and back. CTDs may take weeks, months or even years to develop. That's why the way we work is so important.

The good news is that most of these disorders are preventable. For more information, SMOHIT produces a helpful pamphlet called "Reducing Injuries through Ergonomics." It is just one of many safety and health training resources available in printed format, DVD and/or CD-ROM to signatory members and contractors. Subjects include fall protection, first aid, HAZMAT, hoisting and rigging, lockout/tagout guide, mast scaffold safety training, confined space entry and dozens more.
