Friday Night Tasting Lineup

2006 Pilgrim Mencia Roble

Bierzo is a region in the northwest part of Spain, known for the production of the Spanish varietal Mencia.  Older vines of this grape have been gaining popularity since the 90s.  Once thought to be Cabernet Franc, the wines it produces can be similar to Loire Valley reds and may possess qualities similar to Pinot Noir.   From the winery: "This noble red is [created] from 100% Mencia grapes, native to northwestern Spain.  The vines producing it are over 80 years old.  Intense ripe red berry aromas and aromas of roasted coffee fill the nose; it is long on the palate with elegant tannins and a lingering finish.  Aged five months in oak casks."  This is an extraordinary price for this rare grape!

Our Price:  10.97

2005 Bodegas Inviosa Lar de Barros Crianza

The Ribera del Guadiana is a fairly new DO, located in the southwest area of Spain near Portugal.  The Lar de Barros is a Crianza aged red wine; 7 months in American and French oak barrels.  This 100% Tempranillo exhibits aromas of spice, blackberries, and licorice.  The flavors range from cherry and plum notes to spicy hints of wood, vanilla, and cacao.

Our Price: 11.57

2006 Naiara Malbec Gran Reserva

Naiara is a family run winery located in Maipu, Mendoza, Argentina.  This 100% Malbec is from vineyards over 60 years old.  The wine is aged close to the Spanish "Gran Reserva" style, residing in new French oak barrels for 22 months.  Aromas of dark berry, smoke, and cocoa are followed by similar black fruit flavors and hints of vanilla, olive, and cocoa.  The finish remains elegant.  Only 5000 bottles produced.

Our Price: 29.97

2006 Aguma Tannat

Aguma Casa Vincola is located in the Provence of San Juan, north of Mendoza, right along the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains.  Tannat is a grape varietal that originated in the Madiran region of southwestern France but is now gaining popularity in South America, especially Uruguay and Argentina.  The wines it produces here tend to be more lush and approachable than the rustic, tannic French versions.  The Aguma Tannat is lush with blackberry jam flavors and subtle tannin to give it structure.  The aromatics express dark fruit notes with hints of spice, cocoa, and vanilla.
