Friday Night Tasting Lineup

2010 Uvica Ardechois Viognier

Vignerons Ardéchois regroups 21 cellars and 1,500 growers in Ardèche, a region straddling the Rhône valley and the mountainous landscape of the Massif Central. Situated west of the Rhône river, Ardèche has seen a culture of winemaking for over 2,000 years.

Sunny & fresh & with some of the richness that you expect from Viognier, balanced by mineral. Great as an aperitif, with fresh water fish, or poultry with cream based sauces. Some nice orange citrus notes here, and a hint of ripe sweetness, without being overly perfumed.

Our Price: 13.57

2008 Vieux Logis Cotes du Rhone Villages Cairanne

From Cave de Cairanne, the local wine cooperative. Renovated in this vintage. Le Vieux Logis Cairanne - Juicy acidity and ripe black fruit, with ripe tannins & a nice bitter mineral note that reigns in the fruit a bit on the finish. Grenache, Syrah, Carignan & Mourvedre. Hand-picked. While it was a hard vintage, we are liking this wine from the cooler Mediterranean portion of the Rhone, in a village that should get promotion to Cru status. Fruity, big, herb & spice, garrigue. Cairanne ends up being the more feminine counterpart to Rasteau, with varied soils & clay.

Our Price: 13.57

2007 Mont Tauch Fitou

Fitou was the first DOC of the region - officially founded in 1948. Fitou wines are red and largely made from Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah and Lladoner Pelut, which sources say is also known as "the hairy Grenache."Fruity & spicy. Carignan, Grenache, syrah. Fitou Mont Tauch is a rich wine with lots of character and a hint of spice. This modern style is blended from selected grapes from the three Fitou villages of Mont Tauch. Interesting and tasty. Deep dense purple fruit on the nose - very earthy - follows through onto the palate with additional smoke characters. Lots of acid and tannin, but pretty good balance. Pair with lamb or beef, Indian food, firm cheeses. Fruit driven & modern.

Our Price: 14.57

2009 La Hase Bordeaux Rouge

Subtle & complex for ripe 2009, with structure providing tannins. While there is fruit there, it is complete and balanced. Great deal for serious Bordeaux. We were very happy with this find, and just bought the last ten bottles. Biodynamic, I just discovered - try it with Duck Breast with Grapes, Pan Roasted Duck Breasts with Sherry, Honey, & Thyme, or branch out and have it with Roast Magret Duck Breast with Shaved Black Truffles (with the money you save on the wine).
