ASSOCIATION NEWS

2015 brings change and added member benefits

"The only thing that is constant is change" is a quote that sure fits the modern digital age. We are constantly facing new challenges in publishing and communication.

To embrace this movement and preserve brand identity, the AHP Board of Directors approved several changes to the membership categories and annual dues effective November 1, 2014 that will allow the association to better serve its members and provide benefits that meet members' needs.

Digital Media members will be reclassified into other membership categories.

The Corporate membership category has been renamed Business membership.

Print Publication membership category has been renamed Publishing Media membership

A dues increase of $5 per member was necessary to cover the association's rising operational costs.

How do these changes affect your membership?

The majority of members will only notice the $5 difference in dues for their 2015 membership. Digital Media members that are transferring to a new category will be contacted to review your membership and to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.

To review the five membership category descriptions, dues and benefits, click here

Added benefits for members in 2015 include:

The redesign of the AHP website to launch in 2015

One branded website is included with every membership

Eligibility of branded website content in the awards competition

Business members receive one additional press release distribution per month

Renewal notices have been mailed to members with a copy of the Members Only Benefits brochure. Annual dues for 2015 are due January 1, 2015. If you have any questions, please contact Chris at 386-760-7743 or ahorsepubs@aol.com

 SEMINAR
Tally-Ho at the Alamo

Thanks goes to the 18 members who submitted 73 names for the 2015 San Antonio seminar. The AHP Board narrowed the field to five finalists and members were surveyed to select their favorite.

And the winner is...Tally-Ho at the Alamo submitted by Fran Jurga. Other finalists included Susan Van Dyke from the Washington Thoroughbred, Fran Severn, and Chris Brune. The official logo will be designed by Barrie Reightler. Congratulations, Fran!

Fran explained how she came up with the name. "I connect Tally Ho! with Teddy Roosevelt, for some reason; he and his Rough Riders are, of course, connected to the bar in the hotel where the conference will be held, and The Alamo is next door, so I have no doubt that TR might have realized that "Tally Ho!" and "Alamo" fit together and may have shouted this out when he rode his horse into the bar and whatever else the bartenders are likely to tell us he (supposedly) did there."

For some history on Teddy Roosevelt and his visits to San Antonio, read  Texas History 101, an article published in Texas Monthly.

The 2015 AHP Seminar will be held in San Antonio, Texas on June 18-20 at the historic Menger Hotel. To all of you, I say, "Let's belly up to the Menger Bar and toast Teddy and his Rough Riders in June!"

AWARDS CONTEST
Tips for success from the judges

As we countdown to 2015, many of you have or are in the process of finishing up your final published work for 2014. This is the perfect time to start reviewing your best stories, designs, and photos and collecting tearsheets and URLs to enter in the 2015 AHP Awards Contest for material published in 2014.

While the contest provides constructive critiques on every entry, we've asked a couple of our award judges to elaborate on what makes an award-winning story, photo, or design. Their tips may help you to select your entries for the upcoming contest as well as shed some light on how to improve your skills in the year ahead.

All members have an opportunity to enter the contest. Rules and entry forms will be available for the 2015 Awards Contest by the first week in January.

How to Write an Award-Worthy Story

Every judge is different, as is every reader and every writer. The ingredients that go into an award-winning story - and the factors that may knock a writer out of competition - are fairly similar. Here are some tips for elevating your work and winning the judge over. Read more

Key Factors for Editorial Design Excellence

In judging editorial design, I always look for certain key factors: consistency in design, typography, photography, editorial content, and reader experience. Read more

Capturing the Award Shot in Photography

Judging the photography submissions for American Horse Publications is an interesting endeavor because the entries can range from portraiture, to environmental, to action sports photography. Each genre has a little different criterion from which I make my decisions. Read more

2015 Equine Industry Vision Award

Nominations are being accepted for an individual or organization that has contributed to the growth and preservation of the equine industry. Sponsored by Zoetis in partnership with American Horse Publications (AHP), the Equine Industry Vision Award is the first of its kind to showcase innovation across the entire equine market, as well as ingenuity and service.

Nomination ballots are due on or before Feb. 6, 2015. Nomination information is available at the AHP website. To request a nomination ballot, contact Judy Lincoln, at (386) 760-7743 or email ahorsepubs2@aol.com.

Spread the word about the AHP Student Award

The 2015 AHP Student Award Contest recognizes the talents of students pursuing careers in equine publishing. Students are eligible to enter the contest if they are a high school senior or an undergraduate college student during the 2014-2015 year, with at least one semester before graduation at the time of application.

Three finalists will win $750 travel award to attend the AHP Annual Seminar in San Antonio, Texas, and have an opportunity to meet leading equine publishing professionals and discuss career possibilities. One Travel Award winner will be selected at the seminar as the 2015 Student Award winner. Cash awards for the winner and finalists are sponsored by AIM Equine Network.

Dani Moritz-Long was the AHP Student Award Winner in 2012. Now, assistant editor at Sidelines Magazine, Dani recently wrote about her journey pursuing her passion of horses and journalism in her blog, Pony Tales. She encourages other students with the passion for a career in equine publishing to become involved in American Horse Publications. Read Dani's blog post here.

A mission with a vision

Forty-five years ago, a group of publishers gathered to form an organization of horse publications. The original mission, "to promote better understanding and cooperation between all facets of the horse industry, irrespective of breed," is true today. Read more.

IN REMEMBRANCE

Remembering photographer David Stoecklein

Western and cowboy lifestyle photographer, David Stoecklein, passed away on November 10, 2015. His impact on horse photography was far-reaching and many of today's top equine photographers were beneficiaries of Stoecklein's talents and mentoring, including AHP members.

"Today is a very sad day for everyone who knew David Stoecklein personally or just appreciated his extraordinary photography. On a personal level, all I can say is that David was more influential in my career as a magazine editor and publisher than anyone else. His passion for the cowboy lifestyle was unequaled and his skill in documenting it unparalleled. You will be missed my friend." DARRELL DODDS

"I have a cheat sheet Journal note card on which I wrote his basic settings for a "blue day," and I carried that in my back pocket when I first started shooting. The first time I met him, I asked him to sign it. He was a generous teacher."

CHRISTINE HAMILTON

Remembering Stoecklein by ROSS HECOX

"Thank you, David, for taking us places through your lens, and for being a mentor and friend to those who sought your knowledge." JENNIFER DENISON

"His signature style was unmistakable. He will be missed." DIANE RICE

"The news is saddening--he truly was an artist and I spent many hours just going through all of his books." MEGAN ARSZMAN

"He and his wonderful talent will be missed. I gaze at one of my favorite photos of his whenever I am sitting at my kitchen table. Rest in peace, David."

STEPHANIE CHURCH

"Maybe we should all try to "shoot a David" and make a gallery of our imitations...it's up to the rest of us to preserve the West now." FRAN JURGA
