SEMINAR

Face time is the best reason to attend

There are many reasons to attend the AHP "Gallop n' Grits" Seminar in Charleston, South Carolina on June 19-21 besides the obvious...location, location, location. And that's why making your room reservation at the Francis Marion Hotel by the group rate cutoff date, May 19th, is important.

Another reason is the line-up of this year's guest speakers who will expand your knowledge of multimedia publishing and more. Gathering a slate of professionals all in one place for an affordable registration fee should make attending the seminar a priority. (Just compare our registration rates to other publishing conference and you will agree).

Technology is changing and so is how we communicate with the horse community. Our role is to provide news and education about the horse world and you need to understand how to reach your audiences, members, clients and visitors using multimedia tools. This AHP seminar will provide opportunities to learn and exchange ideas to help you grow professionally as well as improve your brand.

Maybe the best reason to come to Charleston is face time. See my Random Ramblings blog post in this newsletter for an explanation.

See y'all in Charleston!

A second time around

By Chris Brune

AHP members visited Middleton Place in 1988.

Over 25 years ago in February 1988, AHP members gathered at the Sheraton-Charleston Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. There were 33 attendees who represented 23 publications. I was there as executive editor of Eastern/Western Quarter Horse Journal.

Not one of the 33 is at the same publication today. Many have retired, some have moved on to pursue other interests, and sadly a few have passed away. However, there are several who are still actively working in the horse industry, me included.

Can the horse industry learn from Vogue?

By Bonnie Marlewski-Probert, AHP Individual Member

If we agree to take a lesson from Vogue magazine whose new cover showcases Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, it is clear that Vogue has made a seed change in their approach to selling magazines and it is one that we can all learn from. Rather than showcase high end fashion and notable celebrities who are making a difference in the world, Vogue went for the short cut and opted to focus on drama and controversy and it worked! Because of that choice, Vogue received millions of dollars in free PR and while they know they may lose a percentage of subscribers, all that free PR is sure to attract a whole new audience.

That said, I would like to suggest following their lead in the horse business. Rather than showcasing horses on the covers of horse magazines or books, we instead, showcase high profile (infamous is best) riders in their bathing suits. That would provide controversy and drama. Oh, wait a minute, that won't work because they all have a farmer's tan and frighteningly white legs and I don't think there is nearly enough power in Photo Shop to fix that!! Oh well, I guess we will all have to resort to extreme tactics and fill our magazines and books with meaningful content that supports the needs of our readers.

Easily enhance graphics for content enrichment

As professionals involved in the publishing business, we all know that graphics and imagery are key to content enrichment.  And more often than not, it would be helpful to handle those little design projects yourself. There's now an excellent resource entitled How to Use Photoshop: The Ultimate Guide for the Design-Impaired Marketer by HubSpot. This extremely user-friendly guide will take you step-by-step through the basics of using Photoshop and other similar design software. Further, if you don't have Photoshop on your computer, this article outlines some great options to consider: 10 Photoshop Alternatives That Are Totally Free.

Reaching out

ACTHA is reaching out to all associations that wish to promote their entry level products.

"We feel the cause of ACTHA is best served by giving jobs to as many horses as possible," says Tom Scrima. "In that regard ACTHA would like to support all disciplines and events that have classes and products for the entry level rider. ACTHA is offering to co-promote between databases each other's offerings. There's no reason ACTHA's 73,000 members and subscribers cannot venture into other disciplines. And there is no reason for riders in other disciplines not to relax with a casually competitive ACTHA event as a cross training vehicle. The model format that ACTHA is now structuring with several associations will be announced soon. We hope this format will serve as a template for many more industry associations where we can share and grow until not only every horse has a job, but the industry can increase as new riders find many ways to enter our industry."

Those interested are warmly invited to call or e-mail Tom Scrima, 830-693-2065, tom@actha.us

Social media owes its life to the battery

 Submitted by L.A. Pomeroy, Equinista

We might joke that social media lives and dies by its smartphones, but in reality it owes its Tweets and selfies to battery life. The only thing that gets my heart racing faster than a deadline is watching my phone's battery fade in the middle of an event. So when I knew I was spending a week posting with JRPR from Ocala's Live Oak International, I took an IT friend's suggestion and put the Duracell Powermat 24-hour power system for Samsung Galaxy S III (my phone model) to the test. The recharger mat, a little larger than the phone itself, comes with a rechargeable phone cover you snap on and backup battery pack/micro USB connector that fits neatly in the palm of your hand with the phone or, in my case, a multi-pocket lanyard. This battery pack is worth its weight in gold. A 10- to 12-hour day taking photos and posting to social media and I never went below 70% power. If you have a Samsung phone, this sleek powermat (about $80) is well worth the investment to never feel tethered to outlets again.

www.Duracellpowermat.com offers battery hubs (I love the Day Trip) and accessories for Samsung, iPhone 5/5S and iPhone 4/4S. In fact, enter special code TakeCharge and get a special 20% off site wide.

Social media's orchestrated war of words over equine welfare

By Fran Jurga, The Jurga Report

Advocates and critics use Facebook and Twitter tools for unified messaging on racing, soring, carriage horse hot-button issues

"They can't say that about us!"

"Can they?"

When a disastrous public relations event smeared an organization, breed or sport in the past, the prescribed course of action was to circle the wagons, call in the public relations pros, and begin a carefully-plotted course of damage control.

These days, we turn to social media

Get Threema, a secure messaging app

 Submitted by Sabine Schleese

Threema is a secure messaging app for the iPhone. It uses end-to-end encryption so that only the recipient that you choose (and not even their servers) can read your messages. It can send text messages, pictures, videos and even lets you share your location in a very secure way. It also syncs with your address book (if you let it) to find other Threema users automatically. And of course the messages are free.

You should consider only using the Threema app to send documents or company videos in future, especially if they are of a sensitive or confidential nature. Whats App has been bought by Facebook and is wide open. In other words, everything on Facebook or Whats App is visible to anyone.

To be extra safe, you can also exchange keys (the individual finger recognition that authenticates the security from each person) the next time you meet your contacts. It's really easy; just scan a code from somebody else's mobile.

Download the Threema app

at http://threema.ch/download and start exchanging messages that can't be snooped on by some random company or government.

Molly the Pony featured on PBS's "My Bionic Pet"

Disabled animals and the scientists who come to their aid with cutting-edge prosthetics are the focus of "My Bionic Pet," which premiered on PBS' "Nature" on Wednesday, April 9 at 8/7c.

One of the animals being featured was Molly, a pony in New Orleans, who has a prosthetic front leg which is extremely rare.

American Horse Publication members who attended the 2009 "Free Rein in the Big Easy" seminar in New Orleans won't forget Molly the Pony who led the second line at the Student Party, Carnival du Cheval.

Molly became a symbol for New Orleans itself. The pony was an equine refugee when Katrina hit southern Louisiana. Abandoned, rescued and then attacked by a pit bull terrier, the gray-speckled "POA" pony, almost died from a badly infected front leg. But Molly survived and her story is one of hope and the "good" that exists in the horse community and the world. Watch clips of Molly and other incredible animals online at PBS.org.

  RANDOM RAMBLINGS
Face timeFacetime

By Chris Brune, AHP Executive Director

We communicate differently these days. Thank technology or do we?

Most of our phone conversations are an automated messaging service with a voice that is often old, incorrect, or hangs up on you.

We spend less time shopping in stores and having small talk with clerks and cashiers. It's more convenient to use an e-commerce storefront and hope the order goes through correctly. If not, we are in a chat room with a first name that you suspect is chatting with a few others at the same time. Worse yet, the alternative option is pushing numbers on the phone until we reach a live voice. And we are usually not in a good frame of mind by then to have a meaningful dialog.

We are still social, however. That is if you count communicating with your friends and fans via any number of social media platforms. Hey, at least this time you can usually see a photo of who you are communicating with.

And these are the ways we communicate in business, too. There are virtual meetings, conference calls and email messages.

What happened to doing business with a handshake?

Where did face-to-face conversations go?

Print on decline? Niche publishing tells a different story

At the NicheMedia Conference in February in Charleston, guest speaker Jim Zielinski, founder of Zielinski Financial Advisors, LLC, an independent financial consultancy, stated, "One notable exception of the print decline mentioned in a FOLIO article, Managing Print Profitably, is Active Interest Media (AIM), where AIM describes print as "strong."

AIM's president and COO Andrew Clurman told FOLIO that print is still relatively strong in niche enthusiast markets and aside from the newsstand, subscription and advertising revenues are positive.

Zielinksi confirms that AIM's position rings true with the kind of numbers he heard from niche publishers at the last Niche Media Conference. "For niche publishers," he said, "print is actually a much higher percentage - still well over 60% of revenue.

While both articles cite that the print product will decline or continue to grow in the future, the print brand is the gateway to provide publishers with the access and credibility to extend the brand with revenue-building events, digital and services.

Zielinski advises, "Take the cash flow that print is generating for you now and consider re-deploying it in other product areas where you have a good risk/return tradeoff for growing revenue."

"If you succeed in that," he continues, "your brand will grow, you will become more relevant, and you will generate more revenue....and profits."

 ASSOCIATION UPDATES
Awards results jitters

By now, 97 member participants are anxiously waiting to learn if they made the finalist list in the 2014 AHP Annual Awards Contest for material published in 2013. Sorry, but you will have to wait until April 30th. It takes 25 judges, multiple FEDEX shipments, and a whole lot of organization to emerge with the results of 736 entries and 57 classes.

So while you wait, here is some feedback from the judges. Several have been longtime judges of the AHP contest however classes are rotated every year based on judges' field of expertise.

"For what it's worth, this was the single, deepest and most competitive category I have ever judged in any contest. Really impressed with the quality of writing this year."

"A challenge...again!"

"Judging this contest was a lot of fun. It was also incredibly difficult, as the entries were quite good."

"There were some beautiful examples and I had a hard time deciding among them."

And my favorite response to my request for the results:

"I am still ripping my hair out over Class XX."

2014 Equine Industry Vision Award winner selected

Zoetis and American Horse Publications are proud to announce that a winner has been selected to receive the 2014 Equine Industry Vision Award. Sponsored by Zoetis, the award is intended to recognize innovation, leadership and service. All of this year's nominees were outstanding examples of these qualities.

The committee has selected the following finalists: Patti Colbert, Patti Colbert Enterprises; Molly Sweeney, Vice President of Horses and Humans Research Foundation; Lyndsey White, Co-founder of Riders4Helmets; and the Retired Racehorse Training Project.

The AHP Board of Directors plus a Zoetis representative voted for the winner. The winner has been notified to allow for travel arrangements. However, the official announcement of the winner and the presentation of the award will be made at the Equine Industry Vision Award Breakfast on Friday, June 20, 2014 during the AHP Gallop n' Grits Seminar in Charleston, South Carolina...to continue reading

Three aspiring students named 2014 AHP Travel Award winners

The qualities that set three talented college students apart from a field of 22 applicants were passion, drive and involvement. Members attending the AHP Gallop n' Grits Seminar in Charleston, South Carolina, will have an opportunity to meet the three AHP Travel Award Winners, Lindsay Paulsen, Rebekah Savage, and Catie Staszak. This year's Student Award Chairman, Stephanie Church, was the perfect candidate to judge the candidates. She has firsthand knowledge of what each of the student applicants was going through at this stage in their lives. Stephanie applied and won the AHP Student Award in 1998.

The 2014 Student Award Winner will be announced on Friday, June 20 during the Student Party, HOOFIN' IT, a fun evening that will take AHP members back in time to the Roaring 20's and the dance called the Charleston.

Jean Abernethy, AHP Member and creator of Fergus, has shown her artistic skills with an illustration for the Student Party. If horses can show their 1920s style, then attendees sure need to hoof it up.

Where is she now?

After graduation, last year's Student Award Winner April Leonard, took some time to work in the "hands-on" portion of the equine industry. She's been training horses, which has enabled her to travel across the United States and experience working in places she has never been to before. "This has been a great opportunity at this time in my life," says April, "but I plan to soon look for an area to live more permanently and search for a career in equine media."

The last word

"The lesson for the magazine media business I took from the show is to disrupt or be disrupted. Those are the only two options."
